The crisp evening air held a note of tension as Taylor Swift knocked on Este's front door. The door creaked open, revealing Este's husband, Mark, with a forced smile plastered across his face.

"Taylor, what a surprise," Mark greeted, though his eyes flickered with unease.

"Hey, Mark. Is Este around?" Taylor's tone carried a hint of concern.

"She's out of town for a few days," Mark replied a touch too quickly, his eyes avoiding Taylor's gaze.

"Oh, got it. I just wanted to drop off some cookies I made," Taylor said, holding up a container. "She loves these."

Mark hesitated before stepping back to let Taylor in. "That's kind of you. She'll appreciate it when she's back."

As Taylor entered, the house felt different, a subtle shift in the atmosphere. She glanced around, noting a few misplaced items—a photo frame skewed on the table, a jacket slung over a chair. Something didn't add up.

"Mind if I wait for a bit? I've got some time," Taylor said, trying to keep her voice casual.

Mark's smile faltered for a split second. "Sure, make yourself comfortable."

Taylor settled onto the couch, observing Mark's every move. She couldn't shake off the feeling that something wasn't right about Este's absence.

"So, how have you been holding up?" Taylor asked, trying to steer the conversation.

"Oh, you know, work's been busy," Mark replied, his fingers fidgeting with the edge of a magazine.

"You must miss Este, though. I can't imagine being away from someone for so long," Taylor prodded, watching for any sign of discomfort.

"It's tough, but she needed this time away," Mark replied, his voice strained.

"Any idea when she'll be back?" Taylor inquired, sensing the tension mounting.

Mark hesitated, his eyes darting toward the clock. "She said she'd be back by the end of the week."

Taylor's phone buzzed in her pocket, a message from Este's sister. "Sorry, just a sec," she said, checking the text discreetly.

The message read: "Este's credit card was used yesterday in town. She couldn't have left. Please find out what's happening."

Taylor's heart raced. She had to find a way to get more information from Mark without giving away her suspicions.

"Hey, do you mind if I use the restroom?" Taylor asked, feigning nonchalance.

"Sure, it's down the hall, first door on the left," Mark replied, a hint of apprehension in his voice.

As Taylor walked down the hallway, she noticed a closed door, slightly ajar. Curiosity getting the better of her, she peered inside, finding Este's study. It was in disarray, papers strewn across the desk, drawers half-open. This wasn't like Este at all.

Returning to the living room, Taylor couldn't shake off the feeling that Mark was hiding something.

"Mark, have you heard from Este at all since she left?" Taylor asked, her voice steady but probing.

"I haven't, no. She said she needed space," Mark responded, but Taylor caught a glimpse of discomfort in his eyes.

Taylor's mind raced, trying to piece together the puzzle. Este wouldn't vanish without a trace, not without telling anyone.

"You know, it's strange," Taylor remarked, choosing her words carefully. "I thought Este would've called or messaged at least once. We're pretty close."

Mark's jaw tensed imperceptibly. "She's probably just taking some time off."

"But she's so punctual," Taylor pressed on, "never misses our Tuesday dinners at Olive Garden."

Mark's expression faltered for a moment before he regained composure. "Maybe she needed a break from routine."

Taylor's suspicion grew, but she couldn't confront him directly without evidence. She needed to investigate further.

"Thanks for letting me drop by," Taylor said, rising to leave. "I'll see myself out."

As she walked to her car, Taylor's mind raced. Something wasn't right, and she was determined to uncover the truth behind Este's disappearance, even if it meant digging deeper and unraveling secrets she never imagined existed.
