THE RIGHTEOUS ━━━ CHAPTER TWO:
HA RIN SOL stared down at her phone screen, miffed. She had thought it as weird; the game that had been automatically installed on her phone when there appeared to be no signal, and weirder yet that she had been given the occupation of the doctor. Hell, she hadn't even scanned the QR code yet-she only had time to immerse herself in her studies so she could make up for the time she had spent skipping class and smoking cigarettes up on the rooftop with Ko Kyungjun. (She wouldn't trade it for a thing though.)
But, she had always been mafia in every game they played-at least back when her and Somi had been attached at the hip, their harrowing grins akin to the other; beaming and radiant, cruel and pointed. The thrill of it all had been worth it at the time, and she had always won.
She rubbed at her head. Ha Rin was a doer-at least she had been before her sudden change of heart. Somi would curate the cunning, conniving punishments and Ha Rin would do her every bidding, performing the gruesome acts. It was how it always had been, how it was always supposed to be. The blood would be on Rin's hands and Somi would be free of criticism. Rin was the crucible, the vessel, for Somi's pent-up rage and violence, and it made sense because she would've jumped off a roof for Somi back then.
Being the doctor just made things complicated-it meant she had to observe. Reading people came like second nature to her, much like breathing, it was an ability she had always had. But observing, she shuddered at the thought-it was different, too different. Unfamiliar things were the ones she chose to ignore-she'd always stuck to the things that had seemed easy, too easy.
She inwardly sighed as she turned to Jisoo, shifting in her seat. "So, what did you get?" She stared at the unnervingly beautiful girl, trying to feign curiosity.
Jisoo let out a chuckle, snickering. "Don't tell me you're actually taking it seriously," she wrapped an arm around the girl, pulling her close. "And civilian, don't tell." She pressed a finger to her lips, winking.
Ha Rin smiled. "My lips are sealed." She motioned to her lips, pulling her fingers across them.
A comfortable silence settled in the air between them, though the unease in Rin's stomach never did leave-her insides were contorting and twisting together and she did not know why, she had no reason to be afraid. The fear that emanated off her was clearly visible, and Rin wanted to tuck it away into a part of her that could not be unlocked.
"Aren't you curious about me?" Rin asked, jutting out her bottom lip.
Jisoo shook her head, "You're mafia, duh, you always are."
Ha Rin's smile dropped.
