Mother looked out of the window, clearly deep in thought.
What was that ominous message? None of us are okay? yeah well I kinda agree, I'm not okay. What is this? I'm so confused, why can't everything go back to the way it was?
"What are you not telling me? what is Lucas not telling me? why aren't either of you explaining anything?" Annie covered her face with her hands.
"I'll explain. You're old enough anyway, no point keeping it from you now." Her mother wearily turned to face her and gently removed Annie's hands from her face. "When you weren't at your original spot in the market I assumed the worst. That Zadimus had gotten you..."
"Who's Zadimus?"
"Hang on, we'll get to that. Let me start by explaining the basics.
"Firstly, humans are not the only race that live on Earth. There is another race and they call themselves the Skychres, which in their language means sky-dwellers. They don't live on the ground, but rather in the sky - high up in the mesosphere. Now, the reason why they're not seen by humans is because of their advanced evolution, which allows them to have what we call the supernatural power of invisibility. The advanced evolution also allows them to build thick barriers which dissolve meteors and meteorites in that area."
"But if their area is invisible then how do they see it?" Annie questioned.
"Good question. They have developed ways to be invisible to humans, so that only their race can view the cities and houses. But you cannot see it since you are half Skyer and half human - a partial. Unfortunately, the Skychres do not treat partials nicely, they are excluded from society and treated like outcasts. I am not a partial so I could view the city clearly if I went up."
This... is starting to make sense... It's still strange and I guess all the stuff I learned about physics doesn't apply here.
Annie's mother tucked a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. A crease formed in between her mother's eyebrows.
"Stop worrying, or stressing or whatever you're doing that's causing those lines to form. I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around all of this, but I'll get it soon enough, don't worry." Annie sighed and stood up, but then sat back down.
there's just one thing I don't understand...
"Why did you come here then? to Earth? Why did you come and get married to some human guy?" Annie's mother suddenly started to examine a beige flower pot next to her with profound interest.
"I...uh...Well I was banished. But that's another story, not one for today." Annie's mother stood up, went to the window and stared at the sky.
"But...will everything go back to the way it was? The autumn holidays are nearly over, mother. What about school? what about my life? that won't change will it? this is all cool and stuff but...I kind of wish I never learned about this." Annie stood up and joined her mother.
Annie looked out at the sky as well, which was filled with ribbons of pink and purple among a background of orange and crimson.
To think that such an empty sky could hold another civilisation. Weird.
Ha, wow... look at me being all wise.
"I wish I could give you everything you want but... that's just not possible anymore. Skychres is becoming too unpredictable."
"What do you mean by unpredictable? obviously a city is unpredictable." Annie tilted her head with confusion.
Her mother sighs and obtained a weary look.
