All my birthdays have always been the same so I'm not entirely surprised that this one was the same too. I woke up to be greeted by Ms. K. She's been coming over to my room for the past four years to check up on me, bring food over and, a few other things. We became close over time and I see her more as an Aunt or something.
"Good morning Hira and happy birthday!" she cried happily. "Thank you, Ms. K I appreciate it." I was so happy that she remembered once again. For the past four years, she has been remembering to wish me a happy birthday and give me a gift.
"Oh right! You're mom allowed me to get you something...–" she said while pulling out a box.
"Here! You can open it." I took the box out of her hands and put it on my bed. Standing up, I ran up to her and gave her a big hug. She's only 51 and still cares enough to buy me a gift. Most people who came to take care of me were around 30 or 40 and none of them cared enough to get me anything let alone remember my birthday.
"Thank you so much Ms. K. I love you." She was surprised, to say the least. I've never told her that I loved her or anyone in that case. She started crying and it just made me hug her tighter never wanting to let her go.
"I love you too Hira." She managed to say. "Now come on open the gift. I hope you like it."
"I'll love it as long as it's from you." I pulled away wiping her tears as she smiled. Coming over back to my bed, I started to open the box. It was a white box with a lot of handwriting in a thick red marker on it. I started reading a few things that were written while opening the box.
Happy birthday, love! Hope you have a good day! I love you so much, Hari! And more. I knew it was Ms. K's writing. I almost started tearing up. I took all the tape off and started opening the box.
"No, you didn't..."
"Yes, I did, Hira. Only the best for you." Ms. K replied.
Staring right at me was an adorable black cat. Ms. K knew how much I loved cats, especially black ones. It was a Bombay kitten staring at me with its big emerald eyes.
"Is it a boy or girl?" I question. "It's a boy. What do you want to name him?" she questions back. "Midnight." "That's a lovely name dear. What would you like to do today?"
"Can we do the usual please?" I ask. "Of course we can."
We spent some time watching our favourite movies and TV shows. At around 2 pm we started cooking some chocolate chip cookies. "You know Ms. K, I never understood why you continued working here," I say while taking out the ingredients from the fridge.
"When I saw you, I remember thinking how you didn't deserve this life. I wanted and still want to give you the love no one else has given you. I'll try to be here for you whenever I can. I love spending time with you Hira and you're the daughter I never had." I started tearing up at her words.
I wasn't one to cry often, or at all really and Ms. K knew that. She came over and hugged me tightly. I hugged her tightly never wanting to let her go, she was the person I felt close to and comfortable to be around.
We later went back to baking but not long after, Ms. K had to leave.
I may have been locked up, but I have a small kitchen and bathroom which connects to my bedroom. So I went back to my bedroom and it being only 3:30 pm, I decided to play with Midnight for a while. I have a TV in my room so I also decided to put some music on.
I was blasting the music while dancing with Midnight in my hands. Then, the song "U&I" by the neighbourhood started playing. It wasn't my favourite song but it was definitely in my top 5 if not 3. I thought nothing could happen right now right?
