It's been a week since I ended things with Zach. He hasn't spoken to me once. Reed and I are still mad at each other. Things are hard right now.
"Okay I need you two to go pick up your grandparents, they're at the Southport Airport, it's about an hour and a half away," Maria said. I looked up at Reed as he gritted his teeth.
"Perfect," he muttered. I grabbed my phone and followed him out to his car. Getting in the passenger seat I slammed the door shut. He glared over at me and started driving. I looked out at the snow as it slowly starting falling. Pursing my lips I pulled my knees up to my chest and held them. Setting my head on my knees I looked at the snow fall around us. The silence was brutal. There was so much to be said. Nothing was though. After a while of driving the sun set and the snow fell harder. I could barely see out in front of us. The roads were getting icy and white.
"The visibilities low, and the roads are icing, there's no way we can keep going," Reed said.
"Can't we just turn back?" I asked worried.
"It doesn't work like that, the roads are going to be covered and the suns not out to melt it," Reed said.
"What do we do?" I asked. He sighed and shrugged. A small sign for an inn lit up as we pulled ahead.
"There," I said pointing. He slowly pulled into the lot. We got out and walked in. I saw him texting Maria. Approaching the front desk I gave the lady a smile.
"Hi sweetheart how can I help you?" She asked.
"Can we just get two rooms?" I asked. She checked her computer and sighed.
"Sorry babe we only have one room, the beds a king size, holidays have us packed right now," The woman said. I looked back at Reed. He gave me an uncomfortable look.
"That's fine," I answered hesitantly. She gave a soft smile as I handed her my card. Reed answered a call and slowly walked away.
"Tension in the relationship?" The lady whispered looking over at Reed. My eyes widened.
"Oh we're not a couple," I said. She grinned at me.
"He hasn't taken his eyes off of you since he walked more than 5 steps away. Seems a little protective to me," she said giggling. I shook my head.
"Trust me, we are not in a relationship," I said as she handed me my card.
"Okay sweetie. Maybe tonight will change that," she added. I giggled nervously and walked away. Reed followed me down the hall as I looked at all the Christmas decorations. Stopping at our door I unlocked it. We walked into the small room.
"Cozy," I mumbled.
"My grandparents are staying at a hotel near the airport, my dad's going to get them in the morning," Reed said as I flipped on a lamp. I nodded slowly.
After Reed and I took showers I sat on the bed and watched him start making a bed on the ground.
"Stop, you don't need to sleep on the floor, it's a king sized bed," I said. He looked at me and nodded hesitantly. I climbed into my side of the bed. He slowly did the same. A large gap between us. Facing different ways the silence was loud. Looking at my phone I looked as the clock hit 12. Tears stung at my eyes. My breathing quickened. I tried to stop and calm myself down.
"Why are you crying?" Reed asked annoyed.
"It's the one year anniversary," I said shakily. Reed sat up instantly. My heart raced as my breathing stuttered. I could feel a panic attack coming.
"Are you okay?" Reed asked.
"No," I whispered trying to breathe.
"Just take a breath, relax," he said.
"I- I can't " I choked out.
"Cass look at me."
I shook my head.
"Cass."
"No I don't want you to see me like this."
"Sit up and look at me."
I slowly sat up and held my chest. Tears streamed down my face as tried to breath. My whole body shook.
"Just look at me," He said slowly. I turned hesitantly and looked over at him. His eyes dimly lit from the moonlight.
"Breathe," He said. I shook my head and as my breathing picked up rapidly.
"Reed I can't," I said between breaths. Our eyes locked as he gave me a longing look.
"Come here," he said with a sorry tone. I broke down and climbed over to him. Laying into him I set my head on his chest and sobbed. I felt his arms wrap around me and hold me tightly. His hands gently stroked my hair.
"You're okay, just breathe," He said. I could feel his heart beat racing. Why was he scared?
"I've got you," he said quietly. My head moved up and down with each of his breaths. Taking deep breaths I could feel myself calming down. My breathing slowed and my heart relaxed. He held me as I shut my eyes.
"Better?" He asked.
"Yeah," I whispered. Stroking my hair I felt his hands run through it gently. I could feel my hand slowly move to rest on his chest.
"Thank you," I whispered.
"Yeah," He replied shakily. I enjoyed the peace I felt. After a few moments I slowly started getting off.
"Sorry, I'll go ba-," I said moving back towards my side. He grabbed my waist and pulled me back in before I had the chance to get away. My heart raced as I felt his grip on me. Trying to stay calm I laid back down on him.
"Stay, please, just for tonight. We don't have to pretend we hate each other," he said. I nodded slowly. Slipping my hand onto his chest, we laid in the silence.
"Okay," I said hesitantly. This felt right. I felt at peace. Safe. For the first time in a long time. His hand slowly caressed my cheek as he tucked my hair behind my ear repeatedly. Shutting my eyes I slowly drifted off. Before fully falling asleep I felt a gently kiss on my head. My heart almost softened as I smiled softly.
My mind went blank, all I was thinking about was him.
