Len slowly opened her eyes, greeted by an intense ache that seemed to radiate from her head to her back. The throbbing sensation was almost intolerable. As she tried to make sense of her surroundings, a voice pierced through the pain, "You're up now. I thought you were dead." a woman, was seated next to her bed. Confusion and fear washed over Len as she came face-to-face with this stranger. Countless questions flooded her mind, and she desperately sought answers. "Who are you? Where am I?" she asked in a hushed and strained voice, squinting at the woman while rubbing her forehead, trying to alleviate the pounding in her head.
"My name is Maria, and you're in Jackson. What's your name?" Len's focus shifted momentarily as she scanned the room for her belongings. "Lenny Aoki- where are my things." Len's voice carried a sense of urgency as she inquired about her belongings.
Maria's concern deepened as she explained, "When they brought you back here we didn't see anything on you. Was there something important in there?" A mixture of disappointment and distress laced Len's response, "Nothing.." Lenny sat up on the bed to where her feet were dangling off the side and while inspecting her self she could see she still had on her clothes from the cabin but her tights had a small rip in them, they were her favorite tights. As Maria glanced out the window and rose from her seat, Lenny's curiosity lingered, but she refrained from asking about Maria's new destination.
"Come in, her names Lenny and be gentle with her; she just got up." Instead, Maria invited someone in. Lenny looked behind her to see the blonde man from the cabin, Tommy, slowly walked in. "I'll leave you two alone." Maria instructed before discreetly exiting the room, leaving Lenny and Tommy alone with unspoken questions lingering in the air.
Unable to withhold her questions any longer, Len blurted out, "Why am I here?" And, "Why didn't you guys just leave me there?" Standing up, she locked eyes with Tommy, who appeared better than the last time she saw him. "I saw you laying beside me when I gained my consciousness." Tommy took a seat where Maria had previously sat and sighed. "Well, you should've just left me there, I was with the people who hurt your brother." Len argued fiercely, disregarding Tommy's statement completely.
"But did you hurt him?" Tommy queried, forcing Len to confront the truth of her involvement.
"No," Len replied, looking away. Determined to clear her conscience, she continued speaking. "Is that girl okay?" Len lowered her head, trying to mask her concern. "Oh, Ellie? She's just grieving. Y'know she wasn't a big fan of bringing you back." Len quickly turned her head, pressing her point yet again. "I told you, you should've just left me." Tommy grew increasingly frustrated with Len's persistent complaints. "Look, Lenny, you're here and safe that's what matters to me. Just.. let it be, okay?"
Overwhelmed by conflicting emotions, Len sat down on the bed, trying to process Tommy's words. "Let it be?" she mumbled.
"Yes, just let it be." Tommy stood up from the small chair.
Tommy, now on his feet, walked over to Len and placed a silver necklace in her hand. "A thank you gift." he explained before quietly leaving the room and exiting the house, the sound of the door echoing in the silence. Len laid back down her gaze fixed on the white ceiling. A wave of sadness washed over her as she whispered to herself, "I miss you, mama." Turning onto her side, she closed her eyes, allowing exhaustion and a deep longing for peace to carry her into a well-deserved slumber.
