Meet Me in the Middle

Part 3

I meet him at the treehouse around 7. He doesn't say anything.

I nearly fall asleep during the movie before he speaks.

"Was it real?"

"Hm?"

I look up at him.

"The kiss, or almost the kiss, was it real?"

"Felt real to me."

"So I'm not crazy?!"

"No." I laugh lightly.

Moments pass.

"It doesn't change anything does it?"

Of course it does!

"No." I smile lightly.

"How long until we say what we really want to say?" He chuckles.

"You first."

"You know my side of the story." He says.

His eyes flicker from my eyes to my hands as I pick nervously as my nails.

"Mine, well my side, is, there isn't one."

"Todays not the day."

"Hm?"

"To say what we mean. You'll never say it until it's too late."

"I'm jealous. I don't like seeing you with other people."

"People or Amirah?" He inquires.

"Today when I saw her talking to you-"

"So you were watching from the window like a creep!"

I stand up to leave, my cheeks crimson.

"Don't go." He says grabbing me.

He pulls me down in front of him.

"Mer, it's always gonna be me and you. Ok?"

"Alright."

He kisses my forehead and hugs me tightly.

I feel like I could melt into a puddle.

"I love you." I say.

For a second I almost feel the change.

I almost see the shift.

The weight of my words are set on him because before today love meant something else but now it's scary and now it feels like I shouldn't say it unless I mean it.

"I love you too. More than anything Mer."

2 weeks later

"What are we doing for break?" She asks.

Amirah is attached to Jungkook's hip. She walks with us everyday all day and she is everywhere all the time.

"Me and Mer, we're-"

I nudge him before he can finish.

"We don't know yet." He says.

We walk to our houses, and I keep walking, Kook stopping with her.

"Bye Meredith, we'll see you in the morning." She waves.

I turn to smile and wave.

"Bye-"

My front door slam cuts him off.

"Meredith you're home!" My mom exclaims.

"You're home?" I rebuttal.

"I just got in, your dad will be in tomorrow."
