Benjamin

After our morning meal, it was time for us to get on the move. I helped Mileah clear out everything before I turned to the tent to check on the warlock, only for me not to find him there.

Worried that he left, I came out. Mileah and Grover looked at me, clearly questioning why I looked as if I was about to lose my mind, but then I remembered I could follow his scent.

Many barbarians often carried the skills of beasts, our senses were more heightened than those of humans. In all honesty, the phrase that calls us animals was never meant in a figurative sense.

I easily found Ash's scent and followed the trail where it took me. I soon reached a river and then stopped behind a tree when I saw him fully naked and busy cleaning himself.

He was sitting on a rock, rinsing water down his back not even noticing me. He looked so calm, so pretty and standing there and staring at him made it feel like the world around him stopped and all I could see was him.

I walked to him before I stood behind him, watching the water cascade down his back. I dropped the pieces of my armour, which startled him, but I quickly grabbed a hold of him to keep him still.

"You got me worried there," I said. "You can't just walk off like that without telling me where you going."

"Oh, is that so?" He said and looked back up at me. "That would only be the case if I was a weak damsel, which I am not. I may be a prince, but I'm not weak! I can take care of myself."

"Hey, I'm a prince myself. Do I look weak to you?"

"Hmph! You had your chance to kill me but didn't!"

I growled and pulled his ass against my crotch. "Because you're my mate now."

"What about our clans?"

"What about them?" I asked. In that moment I could care less about what they wanted or the wars that happened all these years ago. "Maybe all this is meant to happen. Maybe it's time for the endless war to come to an end. We are destined to be together to unite our clans."

"The world is a lot bigger than the two of us, Benji..." he pulled my arms off him and suddenly his mood has changed.

He stepped out the water and picked up his clothes before he got dressed. I had no clue what I did or say wrong. Things started so great between us this morning and now he was being cold and distant towards me.

I decided to get out of the water and dressed as well and followed behind him, walking back to the campsite. The walk there was silent and the tension in their became thick.

He didn't even look at me once and it frustrated me a little. I knew we couldn't be on the run forever, but he couldn't lose hope not now.

It was against our clan law to have any relationship with a witch and I bet the same rules applied to their clan and kingdom. But what if we weren't under those jurisdictions?

What if we could make our own rules and our own laws? What if  I could create our own clan?

I would risk my own clan just so I could be with him. My father wouldn't take this lightly, he'd see it as a declaration of war and challenge us.

But wasn't him who said I needed to be happy? Didn't he tell me that I needed to settle in and find someone to share my life and adventures with? I now found that person, I wasn't going to let anyone get in the way of that.

"Wait..." Ash said and held up his hand to my chest, stopping in his tracks.

I stopped as well, the back of his hand touching my chest. "What is it?" I asked him.

"I can feel someone using magic and it's very, very close!"

And suddenly there was a big explosion above. I ducked and pulled Ash to the ground, using my body to cover him and shield him from the blast.

This was witchcraft. The witches have already found us.

"You good?" I asked and this protectiveness in me took over. I checked for any wounds or bruises on his body. "You're not hurt are you?"

He looked at me, eyes wide as if he was shocked to hear me ask that. "You're worried I got hurt?"

"Of course, you're my mate, so I do care about you."

"I-I'm fine...eh...we have to check up on Mileah and Grover!"

I got up after seeing that he really didn't have any signs of bruises. "Stay here. I'll go check on them."

"No! You don't have any weapons on you, so the best shot you got is me!"

Heat rushed to my cheeks after my mate basically just put me in my place. I wanted to smack myself for being so suffocating him. Of course he can fight for himself idiot, he's the son of the Merlin!

"Fine, but just because I don't have weapons doesn't mean I can't fight. I'm half god after all!" I added clenching my fists before I took the lead. "I'll lead, you cover for me!"

I could feel the heat surging through the forest. All the trees were set ablaze after the blast and the closer we got, the more we saw how much damage was done.

We camped out here because we didn't want to involve any of the human clans, but after that explosion there was no avoiding their attention.
