Ash

Pretty quickly I was surrounded. The two on the left and right, moved around me so they could block any possible passage of me escaping.

I never met a barbarian, I only heard stories about them and that their clans were our enemies. I could care less about the feud tommy father had with their king. I just wanted the freedom to live.

"Move out of my way," I said, trying to be merciful first.

"Should we do it here?" The one on the right with the female voice asked the one on the left. "It looks like he's alone."

"Don't underestimate him!" The other in front of me said. He looked taller and bulkier than the other two. I assumed he was the strongest. "He's a powerful witch, one wrong move and he can incinerate you!"

The other male pulled out duel swords. "Oh, come on Benji! Surely a little witch won't scare you!" And then he was the first to attack me.

As tall and strong as this one appeared to be, I couldn't help but notice how slow he was. Even with him coming at me with two swords, I ducked.

I swiftly side stepped pass him and aimed my hand at his rib cage where I blasted him into the woman and sent them both hurling off the road into a tree.

I kept my face under the hood, even though I knew my face could be seen or they wouldn't have attacked me in the first place. I wasn't born yesterday, these were assassins sent from the north, obviously meant to assassinate me. What better opportunity than the day of the festival?

"You're next!" I said to the tall one, holding a fire ball in my hand before I threw it at him.

It blasted him against his chest and sent him sliding back on his heels. Unlike the other two, he didn't seem fazed by the blast.

"Cute..." he said and reached for his sword.

I couldn't help but feel alarmed by this barbarian. He tanked minimal blast aimed at his chest and appeared unscathed. Was he even a barbarian?

"Don't call me that!" I didn't wait for him to make the next move. I ejected fire from my boots to propel myself into the air.

I twirled once I went over him and sent more fire blasts his way. He dodged and used his sword this time to block and defend. My every attack was sharper and more precise.

As much as I would've loved to stick around and kick his ass, I also didn't have time for this. I was running away from home after all.

"He's getting away!" The female said when she saw me backing away once I was in the path again.

I slid my heel across the dirt in a semi-circle which surrounded all three of them in a ring of fire, trapping them inside it.

"Adios!" I waved at them and turned on my heels.

"Going somewhere?"

Just as I turned around, I walked into the big barbarian again, my face nearly hitting his chest first. I quickly took a step back and stole a glance back to the fire ring I conjured. How did he escape? I made that specifically so that none of them got out until I was no longer in close proximity of the spell.

"I can jump pretty high," he said answering my question. "My cloak did get burnt though but that's okay. We already found you and now I just need to finish the job."

And he was without his cloak, because what I saw then made me feel like I needed to blink and rub my eyes because this had to be a dream.

He was tall, muscular, blonde messy hair with sky blue eyes. He had a deep, husky and manly voice and had this intense gaze in his eyes. Looking into his eyes felt like looking into the stars. I never learnt what true desire in my life was up until now.

I saw his Adam's apple moving and it was as if he kept staring at me too. His eyes went from intense, to hunger. At first I easily could've assumed that was bloodlust and I wasn't going to give him a chance to deliver the finishing blow.

I held my hands together to create a rotating sphere of fire, charging up enough magic to concentrate all the fire to a single point. This was a risky spell, since I might burn the forest in the process and give my location away to Grayson, but I didn't feel like I had a choice in the matter.

The barbarian's gaze softened and his hand went off the hilt of his sword before he reached a hand out to me. "Wait!" And there was a moment of pause.

"Ash!" I heard Grayson call my name. "Hey, get away from him!"

Fuck!

I looked back and saw him coming with two others tailing behind him. I was running out of time. I could either use this concentrated fire to burn this oaf into a crisp or I could use it to throw those idiots off my tail.

"Benjamin, we need to go!" The female barbarian said. "Finish hun already so we can get out of here!"

I couldn't let them kill me, not when I was this close to getting away. I looked around feeling so damn confused and apparently I wasn't the only one confused.

I looked at the beautiful man again and saw that same look in his eyes again. He was hesitating and so was I.

"Release them," he pleaded. "I won't let them hurt you."

"You came to assassinate me!" I protested.

"You're not what I expected you to be! And it looks to me like you're running, so can you trust me? I can help get you away."

"I can't trust your friends!"

Grayson was closing in and by the time I realised that I had too much fire concentrated into one ball, it was too late. I was so busy overthinking everything that I didn't realise I was forcing too much magic into one place and now it needed it to go somewhere before it exploded.

I lost control and did the only thing, I could possibly think off. I threw the ball into the air and let it detonate.
