p.s watch out for le smut STARTING NOW.
It was like the world had come to a standstill.
Shops were closed, restaurants were boarded up, and schools were empty until further notice. Not a soul stirred in the street; not even the birds seemed to sing in those days, and looking outside, you'd think the apocalypse had come.
Children couldn't play outside; barbecues were a thing of the past, and the height of excitement was when the odd car drove past - and even then, it would only be a police car checking for stragglers. The only sign of life would be the odd twitch of curtains in windows or longing faces peering out at the streets they longed to walk.
No one dared step foot outside their door, and for good reason. The world wasn't safe, forcing everyone and their mother to stay home to protect themselves and others. As maddening as it was to stay indoors day after day, isolated from friends, family, and fun, it was for the best.
At least, that's what (y/n) told herself as she cosied up deep in the Man's Nest, watching the morning news like she did every morning.
"Quarantine," Trent Overrunder announced through a grainy camera, not the pristine equipment his news studio used. Everyone had to be isolated, even news anchors, so he broadcasted from his living room, far away from his infuriating colleague.
"The number between thirteen and fifteen." It was a small blessing to avoid Mary Gaperman like he often did. Still, her cheerful, clueless nature was strangely comforting as she presented to the nation in front of her DIY KLVY background - she'd drawn it herself. It was nice to see them every day; the normality was welcome when life was in such disarray.
"No, Mary, that's fourteen. This is the other thing that we've talked about," the man replied dryly, making the woman giggle as she slowly slurped her cereal, sitting cross-legged on a rarely used couch.
She almost felt normal, sitting there, watching the TV like any other thirty-something-year-old woman and not a superheroine since their schedule usually dictated waking up at ridiculous times after a long night of crimefighting.
"Shelter-in-place."
"That's right. Swellview's freedom of movement has ended. It's gone," Trent reminded the city, his usual joking doing nothing to dampen the severity of the situation. Not many people liked staying home, huffing, puffing, and protesting because they missed the outdoors. That's the thing; they didn't miss it until it was gone, and by then, it was too late.
"Safer at home," Mary highlighted in a weirdly poignant voice, even though she barely knew what day it was, let alone the big story.
"The Vice Mayor says that effective immediately, everyone in the city of Swellview must remain in their homes, and it's all because of an industrial accident I can't describe without laughing..." Admittedly, it was a pretty funny reason--almost unbelievable when it first broke.
(y/n) could barely believe it, finding the idea of isolation slightly intimidating when her life was dictated by public service. The thought of living out the foreseeable future with just her doofus - no kids, no visitors, no work phone calls - was too bizarre to get used to. They were just too used to being so damn busy all the time.
"There's a gas leak...at the Bhutt Factory," Mary reported, her face barely twitching despite how funny the accident was. It was really no laughing matter, not when people could possibly die if they inhaled the leak, but the woman couldn't help but laugh at her TV.
