The next day, the two of them went shopping. It was fun for a while until an old crotchety lady who came up to them with a gummy grin and eyes fixed on May's stomach asked them when the baby was due.
May frowned. "We're not-"
"- sure yet," Phil interjected smoothly. He slipped his hand into hers and smiled at her. "We just found out a little while ago.
Phil's idea of a practical joke. Still, May's stomach fluttered at his earnest grin. Maybe she was in love with him. She nodded with a small, awkward smile at the old woman.
"Well, the two of you look wonderful together, so cute!" The old lady sighed. "Your kids will look gorgeous, I'm sure."
Phil chuckled. "Thank you, ma'am. If you'll excuse us?"
She got out of their way quickly. "Good luck, kiddos!" the old lady called.
Phil burst into a wheezing fit as the lady got out of ear-and-eye shot. "That was hilarious," he said breathlessly.
"Really?" May mused skeptically. "How so?"
"It just is." He gazed at her with his laughing eyes and a still breathless smile and for a moment, May wondered what it'd be like to kiss him. Really kiss him, not just as a cover. Phil clapped, and May blinked. "Let's get some baby cushions!"
He wandered off into the other aisle and May stayed there, looking at the baby clothes. There was a baby blanket that had a little daisy pattern on it. The baby's name was Daisy, wasn't it? She picked it up and went to follow Phil.
The next few days went by in a flash as Phil confirmed with Cal that he was going to bring a bassinet over.
They baby-proofed the sharp corners and found that there were barely any corners in the apartment as it was. Phil got some diapers and baby food and stocked his drawers as needed. It was a little rushed, but they made it work.
Finally, on the morning of the sixth, Phil went down to the parking lot to meet with Cal to grab the bassinet and the baby bag while the man carried the baby up in his arms.
"Thank you so much for doing this, Phil," Cal said gratefully. "You're the best."
"I'm far from, but thank you." Phil opened the door to his apartment to see May there already. "Morning, Lin."
"Hey," she said, eyes taking in the sight of him with the baby stuff.
Phil chalked it up to her not getting enough sleep and brought Cal to put Daisy down in the bassinet that Phil placed by the couch. He patted Cal on the shoulder. "You okay?" he asked gently.
"I'll be at some point," Cal replied, not taking his eyes off of Daisy. He seemed to be drinking in the sight of his daughter sleeping peacefully. "I need to go. Um, funeral arrangements. In China."
Phil nodded. "Safe travels," he said lightly. "I'll take care of Daisy, I promise."
"I have... no doubt." Cal nodded his farewell, brushing his thumb against Daisy's rosy cheek before leaving. He doubled back at the door, giving Phil a hug before really leaving.
So Phil and May were left with the silence of the apartment. The two of them crowded around the bassinet to stare at the newborn who was sleepily soundly, her little chest rising and falling as a hazy smile turned the corners of her mouth up.
"She's perfect," Phil breathed. "Look at her. Look at her little smile."
"I'm looking," May replied softly. "I know what you're talking about." She reached down to tuck the end of Daisy's blanket back in. "This is easily the cutest kid I've seen in a long time."
