As soon as Dex was in bed, he let the strategic thinking commence.
Because apparently that was the only important thing he was able to do.
His job in the Black Swan mostly involved building gadgets and getting left out from most of the big missions. But he was supposed to be used to that now.
Dex had his gray notebook on his lap and his pen in his hand, and he was ready to start pouring his plans onto the page.
Sophie was too emotional to have any real plan at the moment, and Dex would wait until she was stable enough to actually think these things through.
For now he was on his own.
There were a couple of variables to think about: what if Fitz didn't want to be found? What if the Neverseen were keeping him captive? Would it be dangerous to rescue him? What if he was too far to actually be reached? Where would the Neverseen put him first?
WHAT IF HE WAS IN OUTER SPACE?
No, that was stupid. Possible, but stupid.
While the Neverseen get creative with their banishments, having hideouts in the Forbidden Cities and the Neutral Territories, space seemed a little too far.
Ooh, but it would be so cool to have a space hideout! And so clever, too. It would make it completely unreachable but it would still be pretty functional. Plus, the whole zero gravity thing can be switched off, of course. And you could-
FOCUS, Dex told himself. You can do this. You can figure this out.
"Dex?" a quiet voice asked from the door. "Can I come in?"
Dex quickly threw his notebook under the covers and said, "Come on in."
"What are you hiding?" Rex asked suspiciously as he stepped into the room.
"What are you doing past your bedtime?" Dex countered, hopefully steering the conversation away from himself and the current problems that the whole world would be facing if he didn't concentrate.
Rex let out an over dramatic sigh. "It's not fair that you can stay up so laaaaaate."
"Well I have important things to do sometimes, and I can't fit it all into the daytime. I think Mom just gave up on trying to get me to sleep."
"I have important things to do, too!" Rex argued, plopping down on the bed, like he expected to stay and have an important chat.
"And what would that be?" Dex asked, almost rolling his eyes but managing not to do so.
Rex shrugged. "What important things do you do then?" he finally retorted.
"Well, I kinda help my friends save the world all of the time, and I have a ton of Team Valiant assignments, and-"
"And I can't do any of that?" Rex snorted. "Can I help you?"
"Well..." Dex hesitated, not sure how much he was allowed to share. "I don't think so."
"Pleeeeeeaaaassssseeeeeeee?" Rex begged, clasping his hands together, trying to look as innocent as possible.
Dex looked at the time, hoping for some sort of excuse for Rex to leave, but he sighed. Rex would find out soon anyway.
"Some people...just...don't think that the Council...well...some people just don't...agree with the Black Swan, or the Council," Dex finally said, fiddling with his pen. "And we need to be ready in case those people tell some secrets."
