(CAMERON'S POV)
Despite being famous and rich, my mom made me get a real job. I now work at Starbucks, one of the most complicated jobs ever. First, I'm dealing with hot drinks. You could see how that would end up. Second, the manager, and customers, expect you to know what the hell they mean by a triple, venti, soy, no foam latte. I do try at my job, but it's so much to remember and do.
I still feel this emptiness about home. Is something missing? Did someone die that I didn't know of? Have people around me just changed? Something felt odd about coming home after a long trip. I sure did miss everyone here. Maybe I'm still adjusting to the home setting. Hopefully then, everything will feel right.
"Grande, iced, sugar-free,vanilla latte with soy milk," a woman asked. After I punched it in, she added a couple cookies. I gave her the total, and she looked at her money, stressed.
"Ummm...." she laid a couple bills on the counter, then dug out the few coins she had.
"You're 12 cents short," I said. She looked utterly exhausted. "You know what? Never mind, you're good." I smiled at the woman. I'm a people-pleaser. It's what I do.
"Oh thank you, sweet boy," she said. "You know, I'd love for you to meet my daughter! Maybe it'll encourage her to hang out with nice boys like you!"
I've dealt with embarrassing moms before, but this one kind of reminded me of mine. So I smiled and said,"I'd love to meet her too." I gave her the latte and she went to a table.
Just then, my boss grabbed my shoulder. "A word, Cameron?" he asked. So my boss is a jerky guy with a goatee. He hates me. And that 12 cents got me fired. I mean, really? It was 12 cents.
But I couldn't help but think about that woman. Would I ever see her again? Would I want to?I pushed the questions aside, because I needed to find another job. Mom thinks I need more experience before I go out into the grown-up world, as she calls it.
