The subway hits a bump, and our car jostles me awake. I look around groggily; we're still alone in our car. Lucky us, to have the whole caboose to ourselves on this slow day. I look down at the angel in my lap, his head resting over my heart, his legs tangled with mine. Aw, they're so cute when they're asleep! I think to myself.
I start to drowsily drift off again, when he starts to twitch. His loose expression tightens. He's having nightmares again. I press my lips through his green curls, and plant a soft kiss into the earthy roots of his hair. I wrap my arms around him, and whisper simple condolences into the top of his head. "You're safe. It's okay. I'm here. I love you." After a while, he stops trembling, jaw unclenching, and seems to relax. I smile to myself, silent praise for a job well done.
It's not long before I fall back to slumber, rocked gently by the subway car, comforted by the warmth of the one I love most.
