The group stood silent as we admitted our impending doom, Matt the whitest of all as he looked to his girlfriend, his eyes glued to her stomach.
With the news of the baby barely fresh in the air this was the worst that he could have hoped for.
"We have guns we could fight" A voice echoed through the crowd, but they didn't see it.
"No amount of gunpower could stop a herd of that size, we would run out of ammo before we even make a dent" I stood over them, watching as each of them trembled in fear.
Sandra spoke up next "What if we waited them out. Turned all the power of, stayed silent. They could walk straight past us".
That was a possibility, but the place would need to be deadly silent and if it didn't work we would be trapped in. None of us wanted to give up this place, we didn't know if there was anywhere safe left, but we couldn't risk our lives on a possibility. Homes could be rebuilt, just like we did here but our lives were irreplaceable.
"It could work" Matt looked to me desperate, Brent and Ben saying the same.
I didn't like the idea, but the only thing we could do was vote as a group. The majority agreed we wait it out and hope for the best, but I couldn't stop that gut wrenching feeling that this day wouldn't turn out the way we want.
"You guys turn the generators off" I pointed to a small group of guards "People in trailers, make sure the engines are dead and the lights are off. I want a group of people to check the fences, make sure there's no gaps that the dead can see in. We have about an hour before they are close, so stay in your homes, pack a bag with food and weapons for the worst-case scenario. Most importantly, stay quiet".
The group dispersed, leaving only me, Matt, Sarah and Carter. "What if this goes to shit" Matt added, I knew he was scared, for the first time in a while he truly had something to lose.
"Then we run. If they get to the gates there's no way the metal will hold. The moment that happens you get the fuck out, get Sarah somewhere safe and make sure you have your walkie. We will find each other" My voice wobbled as I looked to them, Sarah pulled me in for a hug first.
"We will make it Katie; you have a cousin to meet" Her voice sweet as she pulled away.
Matt was a mess when he embraced me, his blue eyes bright as he held back tears "Don't you dare lose that walkie, I'm not going anywhere without you".
"No Matt. If you don't see me or hear from me you get her somewhere safe, I get you want to keep me safe, but that baby is the most important thing" Matt was about to argue but I stopped him "Please, just keep them safe okay. I love you".
"I love you so much" Matt pointed to Carter "Keep my niece safe" The boy smiled, reminiscing the first time Matt told him that on the rooftop. But he nodded grabbing my hand, I took one more look to them before walking away.
I didn't know what today would bring, but all I could do was hope and pray that they make it out okay.
"Let's get Hayley" Carter smiled, trying to keep the worried look from my face but nothing would work.
"Same goes for you Carter" He stopped in his tracks, looking down to me "If anything goes wrong you get Hayley out, take her somewhere safe".
"I'm not going anywhere without you" Carter cupped my ashen cheeks, I knew he would say that, but I need him to know she was more important "I'm going to be by your side the whole time, if we do have to get out, we go together".
I nodded my head and sighed, I wasn't going to argue with him, but I think he knew that she was our main priority. My husband leaned down kissing me eagerly, each time we were facing death our kisses always felt like goodbyes, the eagerness of his hold showing his true feelings. When he parted he lent his forehead against mine "We will make it".
"I know".
The hour waiting was torture, The three of us were sat outside our building, three rucksacks next to us as we sat behind a wall. Hayley knew this world almost too well, so when we explained what was happening she looked scared, but she understood. The small girl was silent, her hands hooked into mine and Carter's hands as we all looked to each other.
The growls were growing closer, they were mere minutes away and all we could do was wait. I felt defenseless with no way to help my family, this would be life or death and there was nothing we could do but stay quiet.
I looked to Carter who looked as scared as me, his eyes running from me and back to the small girl we vowed to protect. We both knew it would be harder trying to keep her safe without the walls surrounding us, we barely made it on the road and that was without a child.
My thoughts were blurred when a loud bang pierced the sky, the bile rising in my throat as I watched a bright red flare fly through the clear sky directly over our haven.
This was the worst possible scenario, that flare was a direct alarm to our location.
Then came the banging of metal, the dead were at our gates.
We needed to go.
