The moment Neil pointed the needle to my skin I lunged for him, the restraints were easily unknotted and the look on his face told me he was like the others that tried to hurt me. Surprised that a women could easily escape from a man tied rope. Idiot.
My hands pushed into his chest until his body collided with the shelve, the tubes and cylinders hitting the concrete with a crash as he grunted. "I'm the last hope for this world, if you kill me you will rot with the rest of the monsters" the man cried.
"Too fucking late" I taunted, pulling the pistol from his waist and aiming it towards his head, the metal barrel dented his skin as I pushed it deeper into his forehead "Now where the fuck is my kid".
"Down the hall" He pointed to the door shakily, the frail wooden door was left closed and I didn't want to know what was waiting for us outside but I didn't have a choice.
My hands wrapped around the back of his grimy T-shirt, the barrel of the gun moving to the side of his head while I pushed him closer to the door "You are going to take me to her, I won't hesitate if you try anything" Neil nodded slowly before opening the door, the hallway was dark and mainly lit by gas lanterns. It looked to be some sort of underground tunnel. "Go". I pushed him further letting the metal dig into his skull as he hissed.
"You could stay" The man whispered as we walked through the darkness, the place was fairly empty "We aren't doing the best but no one finds us here".
"No" My voice was stern, I was annoyed. Not at just the fact they had Hayley, the fact of how our lives changed in a matter of days. "You sick people need to learn you can't take anything you want" My anger was bubbling and I didn't know how long I could control it "We build and build and for what. For entitled people to fucking take it. So no I'd rather take my chance on the road because the monsters out there are no worse than you".
Neil stayed quiet only slowly nodding his head as we approached another door, the same blonde woman stood outside with a pistol held to her side. Her eyes widened the moment she noticed us, her first instinct going to her weapon but when Neil hissed in pain from my force she stopped "Give me the kid and I don't shoot his brains out" The girl eyed me with a fire, but without thinking she threw the gun to the floor.
"Get the girl" Neil nodded softly to her.
The waiting felt like forever, and when she finally appeared from the door I felt my breath finally slow down. Her big blue eyes melted into mine and when Hayley ran to me and wrapped her arms around my waist the tears were pooling "Now you are going to let us leave".
I stepped away keeping the gun aimed at the two "You will regret this" Neil stuck a few last words on us as we slowly neared the exit.
"Not as much as you if I ever see you again" I took Hayley's hand in mine as we sprinted the last few steps until we finally made it to a metal gate, we didn't stop until we past the tree lines of a small forest and we were a safe distance from the horrors we were forced on. I knelt into the dirt taking both the small girls hands in mine, she looked fairly untouched "Are you okay? Did they do anything".
Hayley shook her head "They told me they were saving the world?".
"They weren't honey. This world can make people crazy, they thought they were doing what was right but they weren't" The girl nodded again, her blue eyes dropping as both our exhaustion kicked in. We hadn't slept or taken a minute to breathe since our home was demolished. "Lets find a place to sleep for the night, huh?".
"Okay" Hayley smiled rubbing her eyes. If it was just me I wouldn't have slept until I found Carter, or my family but I had someone else to think about other than myself now.
We walked the edge of the town for a while searching for any safe place, at night it was harder to spot a lurker and the sun was slowly setting so we didn't have long. "Look" The small voice echoed from beside me, her finger pointing to a water tower a few meters ahead of us.
"Its perfect" I smiled down to her.
We climbed to the top carefully avoiding the worn nails poking from the metal, the rusty can was obviously empty but the metal balcony surrounding it would be our home for the night.
I lent against my backpack while Hayley settled into my side, it didn't take long until her eyes fluttered close, her soft snores filling the empty space.
I was completely drained. Mentally and physically. But each time my eyes closed, all I could see was him.
Every part of me missed my husband. What if we didn't find him? What if he was already gone.
Each and every one of my questions had no answers, and no way of finding them, and slowly, my hope was fading.
