I can’t believe this.  This is… this is… dreadful.  Ugh.  “Julissa, go sit by Jonathan.  While you were gone Joletta moved to the seat by Adam, I think its better that way.”

Joletta.  Joletta needs to sit next to Jonathan.  I need to sit next to Adam, it would be better THAT way.  This woman doesn’t know what she’s talking about. I think.  Joletta WOULD be the one who gets to sit next to him. Even worse, in this class Adam sits in the back corner, now I sit in the front corner, the farthest away from Adam in the whole class.  I’ve been taken from him.

I set my stuff down in the place next to Jonathan and made sure not to slam it.  He looked at me then looked away.  “Okay class,” Mrs. Yare said, “today we are doing an experiment, it is on convection currents.  I will give you your materials -do not touch them- then I will give you instructions as of what to do.”

A small, plastic container, two long droppers, green and yellow food coloring, and a styrofoam cup.  “Take out your journals so you can take notes.” Mrs. Yare instructed us.  As soon as she saw we had all done as we were told, she continued.  “Now.  First, take your plastic containers and walk over to the nearest sink and fill your container with water about an inch from the top.  Do your best to guess an inch.”

“I’ll do it.” Jonathan says, taking the container and walking to a sink.

I bite my bottom lip and nod.  I don’t really know how to act around him, I’ve never had to talk to anyone else but Adam.  I haven’t felt so nervous at school in a long time.  I fold my hands and put them in my lap, the science chairs are tall and backless.  More like stools.  Jonathan comes back when I start rubbing my thumb so I stop and unfold my hands.

“I see that everyone is prepared with their water we will continue.  Take one of your droppers and the green food coloring…” She told us how much food coloring to take, where to put it, how to look at the container, and how to take notes and make a foldable.

One hot water spill and a new shirt later my mom just took me home.  “Sweetie, I know you really want to be there but you just got home from the hostpital and I don’t need to take you there again if you get third degree burns from science class.  I think I’m just going to keep you home for the rest of the week.”

“Mom!  How can you do this to me?” I ask.

“Honey, don’t make me feel like I’m on an overdramatic teenage TV show.” She tells me.

“Okay.  But… will I still be able to go to Adam’s after school for homework?” I ask her.  If the answer isn’t yes I think I might go crazy considering it’s Wednesday and I will have to wait for Monday.

“Yes.  I have already talked to Julietta and she says she will tell Adam to bring all of your homework home with him and you can work on it after school with him like usual.” My mind sighs but out loud I don’t or she might suspect something.

“Okay, just wondering.” I say innocently.

“Do you like him?” She asks, trying to have a mother-daughter that all daughters hate.

“Mom!  No, I’ve known him too long to like him.” I lie.  I’m not the biggest fan of lying but if I told her I liked him he would somehow find out.  I can feel it.

“There’s a limit?” She sounds doubtful to this.

“Oh yeah.”  I tell her.  “There’s a limit to everything and I have long surpassed the limit to like Adam and during the time I could, I didn’t.” I tell her.
