My hand goes up to wipe off the bead of sweat trickling down my forehead. Even though my air conditioner is on sixteen, I'm still sweating, curled up into a ball under my light black blanket.

What Damontae said before he left left me disturbed, so as soon as he drove off, I switched off all the lights in the house and locked my room door in case something happens. It's been plauging my mind and it's adding to the numerous questions I need to ask my big brother. Is anyone after him? After us? Because it's highly possible; anywhere Tae goes, danger follows. As if he has a bad omen hanging visibly above his head.

I'm so stuck in my head that I almost don't hear the sound of a car driving into the compound. My muscles tighten as I feel my fear overwhelm me. What if it's those people he's running away from, whoever they are?

Afraid, I start mumbling silent prayers to God in heaven, begging him to have mercy on me, to spare my life and let me live to see another day at least. Twenty minutes into my little prayer, I hear low inaudible voices outside my door. This is when I start shivering under my blanket, shaking my bed as I do so. Nonetheless, out of curiosity, I still peek at the door from under my covering. The sound of someone struggling with the lock catches my attention and it only makes me more afraid. I curl into a tighter ball while patting the key of my door under the pillow.

Eventually, I sense the door unlock, and I hear it open wide. I shut my eyes and start screaming

"PLEASE DON'T DO ANYTHING TO ME! PLEASE I'M SORRY! PL-"

I'm cut short by a deep masculine voice saying, "Serenity, it's me nau."

My light bulb  flickers to life and someone yanks my blanket off me, revealing my chubby sweaty body. My eyes meet an extremely familiar pair of light brown eyes and all traces of fear disappear immediately. I eye him and drag a long hiss.

"So it's you," I say sassily. "You know you scared me before you left to wherever you went, ba?" I sit up and point an accusing finger at him, getting annoyed by the amused look on his face. "You have a lot to explain!"

In a fit of anger, I stand up from the bed so I can go vent in the bathroom but he grabs me by the shoulders and pushes me back on the bed.

"You'll get the explanation you want," he folds his arms and walks back to the door. "Or don't you want the explanation?"

I'm about to nod my head when I notice that there's another person in the room, and it's not just any person, it's an extremely pretty lady. My eyes slowly gloss over her entire body, from her smooth chocolate coloured skin, to her upturned brown eyes, to her dainty nose and to her sharp chin. And my eyes don't forget to stupidly stare at her clothing. She's donned in a white tube dress that clings to her slender frame like a second skin, accentuating the curves and edges of her fragile-looking body.

I quickly look away when I feel jealousy burn in the pit of my stomach.

But I still glance at her from the corner of my eye.

From the looks of things, she too, might have been staring at me as well.

"I'm Yetunde," she smiles. When Tae reaches the door, she wraps her delicate hands around his muscled arm. "I'm his girlfriend. Nice to meet you."

I hesitate before I say, "Nice to meet you too."

What does this boy have up his sleeve? Bringing some fake girl to be his girlfriend. There's no way this fine girl would settle for a handsome idiot like Damontae.

"He has something to tell you," she continues while tightening her grip around his arm.

"Okay?" I reply as I sit on my bed with my legs in a criss-cross. I rest my elbows on my knees and use it to prop up my face, looking attentive but still afraid.
