CHAPTER EIGHT, booby traps and a weird green liquid.

STEVE HARRINGTON didn't realize how badly he fucked up.
How could he? After consistent failure in the love department, he finally scored a goal. This time, he didn't even have to try, not even a little bit. It was all up to Elizabeth—a teenager who was once a part of the Hawkins High Cheerleading team. They hardly interacted though, so, naturally, he was confused when she approached him in the parlor today. Being asked out was the last thing he could've ever imagined to happen, let alone after all this time of being on the market. There's no question how much he's been struggling in the female department. After the downfall of his last relationship, he thought he had no luck—
A voice interrupted his critical thoughts, sweet and feminine, belonging to someone dear to his heart. "I'm going to join the others. I hope you two have fun on your date," Emmy Dawson announces, her tone dripping with evident sarcasm. The teenager couldn't hide her jealousy, despite her best efforts to conceal it. She side-eyed Elizabeth before walking off, solidifying her departure with a hard glare in Steve's direction.
That's not what he expected to hear. His eyes followed her retreated figure, a frown fell on his features. Her voice sounded blank. She's been awfully quiet today, more than usual. Based on his own conclusion, he figured she wasn't in the most ideal mood. According to him, she'll come around when the time is right. Then again, he couldn't help but wonder—why did she leave? Did he do something wrong? His mind raced, trying to decipher the sudden change in her mood. He felt a pang of confusion mixed with a hint of concern. She wouldn't leave him without a valid reason. He's sure of that. The way she uttered the word "date," was unmistakable, as though the very sound of it was laced with venom. Could it be that Emmy was upset about him having a date with someone else?
That couldn't be the case, right?
He set his thoughts aside and continued his conversation with Elizabeth. She was clearly interested in him, and he wanted to feel happy about it. In fact, he should have been thrilled. After all, in his current situation, the attention of women had become a rarity. It was disheartening to realize how far his reputation had fallen, considering there was a time when women were drawn to him like magnets. Now, things were far from that—his prospects had become rather bleak.
Elizabeth was undeniably beautiful, but for some inexplicable reason, his eyes kept wandering, as if his thoughts were elsewhere. And there she was, right where she had been before. She had rejoined the others, and he could only glimpse the side of her face. He noticed how she propped her head up with her elbow, a faint pout forming on her lips. Then he saw Erica Sinclair offer the teenager one of her many treats. Emmy accepted the offer, her mood visibly brightening as she savored the delicious bite.
