CHAPTER SEVENTEEN, can't help falling in love. ⋆.ೃ࿔*

THREE MONTHS.
In just three months, everything had changed again. As October rolled in, it was another reminder that the year was almost over—a year that they all wished they could erase. It had been relentless, leaving a mark on everyone who lived through it. For Emmy, the weight of it all made time feel slow, yet it passed by like a blur, the days blending into each other in a haze of moments she'd rather forget.
Her eighteenth birthday, a day that should've been special, felt like any other. Eighteen was supposed to mean freedom, a new beginning, and a chance to start fresh. But with everything that had happened, it didn't feel like the milestone it should've been.
There was no excitement, no anticipation—just a quiet acceptance of another day gone by, colored by the mess that had tainted the last few months.
That's when Steve stepped in. He wasn't about to let the girl he cared about have a terrible birthday. For him, that just wasn't possible.
And just like that, the Harrington teenager, ever thoughtful, knew how much she needed a break from the heaviness that seemed to follow her. So, he made sure her birthday was something more than just another reminder of time slipping away. He took her out, made her laugh, and gave her the kind of day she deserved. He even bought her a few gifts—gifts that she didn't expect to receive.
For those few hours, Steve managed to pull her out of the fog she'd been living in, reminding her that there was still light, still joy, even if it felt far away.
But once the celebration was over, reality came crashing back with the start of the school year. Emmy dreaded it because of the obligations that came with it. Among those obligations was her requirement to attend counseling twice a week. From the outset, she had wanted nothing to do with it. Skipping sessions became her form of rebellion, a way to grasp control in a life that felt increasingly chaotic and unmanageable.
She dismissed the warnings from her counselor and the concerned looks from her friends (the ones who knew), convinced that avoiding the sessions was her right. Wasn't she in control of her own life?
That was, until Alexis got that phone call.
When her aunt became embroiled in the situation, Emmy realized she couldn't keep dodging the sessions any longer. Alexis wasn't the type to let things slide; she had a no-nonsense approach to family matters, and Emmy knew she didn't want to deal with the fallout at home. Reluctantly, she began attending, though each session felt more like a punishment than a pathway to healing.
