Vivian Ford —— October 2011

HERSHEL WANTED ALL OF THEM OFF
HIS FARM as soon as the sun lifted itself over the horizon. Vivian couldn't blame him, as much as she hated the fact the barn was full of deadheads, she couldn't deny accepting how Hershel felt.

He believed that the deadheads inside the barn were sick, and even though he was as delusional as they came, Vivian knew Shane had no right deciding what would happen on Hershel's property.

Currently, the redhead stood in the kitchen of the farm house, drying and putting away plates as Beth washed them. Neither of the girls said anything the entire time the two were in the kitchen together, Beth silently washing the dishes with a look of heartbreak across her features.

Vivian sympathized for Beth, she's spent who knows how long believing her mother and big brother would someday recover from the infection. Now that they were gone, it was like any hope Beth once had of the world going back to normal died with the deadheads outside the barn.

When Vivian finished putting away a ceramic plate she turned back to Beth to grab whatever dish she had just cleaned. Beth exhaling deeply as she handed Vivian a mug, only to stumble forward like she lost control of her feet, pulling the rack of dishes with her. The sound of shattering glass and ceramic dishes echoing through the air:

Vivian's eyes widened, looping her arms underneath Beth's so she wouldn't fall into the mess of shattered dishes beneath her.

"Oh my god!" Maggie shouted fearfully as she and Glenn ran into the room.

"Mom!" Vivian shouted over the older Greene sibling, knowing that if anyone could help, it was her mom. She was a nurse for over twenty-years, she should know what to do.

"Vivian?" Her mother questioned as she ran into the room, her eyes widening in horror. Meanwhile, Maggie had pulled Beth out of Vivian's arms, pulling her body into her bedroom, setting her gently on her bed. Beth laid across her mattress lifelessly, breathing faint, eyes open, staring blankly at the ceiling above her.

"What's wrong with her?" Lori asked, having ran to check on Beth the moment she heard something was wrong.

"She's in shock." Jenn told the brunette truthfully, pressing her index and middle finger against the soft spot behind Beth's ear. "She's got a pulse, that's good. Maggie, where's your father?"

Before the woman could answer herself, Glenn spoke up from the opposite end of the room. "We can't find him anywhere" he told Lori. "Not since the others started digging the graves."

"Vivian, you go keep an eye on your brother and Carl, alright?" Jenn asked, Vivian nodding without question and leaving the room. She found Thomas and Carl on the porch, worried expressions across their faces.

"Is Beth okay?" Carl was the first to speak.

"She's alive." Vivian told him shortly, looking down at her brother. "Mom says she's in shock, it's a trauma response."

"Trauma...response?" Carl asked, his brows creased in confusion.

Vivian bit her tongue, shutting her eyes as she exhaled deeply in annoyance. "It's exactly what it sounds like. She went into a state of shock because of what happened outside the barn, her body doesn't know how to process that level of stress, so it froze up."
