"You did great today Valarie," Lisa said as she was locking the door to the shop, "you know you should start working here full time." her big brown eyes looked up into mine.
I smirked as I leaned my shoulder onto the red brick wall, "And why would I want to do that, you know I already have a job."
"You know what I mean Val." She said, "A real job, a job that pays you."
"Hey, vampire hunting is a real job-"
She let out an exhausted sigh interrupting me and rolled her eyes, which meant she was starting on her long tangent, "You know hunting vampires isn't a real job, right?" not even give me a second to answer, "and don't tell me that saving people is enough of a reward, you know that's true. You act as if your life has no value. I-," she sighed again, "You know what, never mind. I'm sick of saying the same over and over again."
"What! You know why I do this. I don't do this because I want to, I do this because I have to. It's what I was born to do. I'm the only thing saving people from those awful monsters because no one else will." I argued, "You know I'm sick of talking to you about this, if you want me to stop you should help me kill those things then!"
"God, I said never mind." she sighed again shaking her head chuckling, "You're so much like your mother, you know that. She was always so stubborn and defensive for no reason." She put a half smile on her face and leaned the side her head against next to mine, "Are you mad at me"
"No, I just think you're kind of annoying"
"Well I think you're annoying too." She paused, "So, you're coming into work tomorrow?"
"As always." I said as I put my back to the wall.
"Well, I'll see you then" she said as she started to stand up straight, "Don't do anything stupid tonight." she started to walk to her car. I watched her until she started to look like a blur. I rested my head against the wall and looked up at the beautiful moon and stars in the night sky. I do actually want to quit hunting. My mom loved to always talk about going to the moon and how if she could have another job she would be an astronaut. I have no clue what I would do if I could have another job, maybe I would keep working for minimum wage at Lisa's Shop.
I started to walk to my apartment, the cold air blowing directly into my face making my nose and ears ice cold. The wind also carried some leaves and wove them into my curly hair. All I could do was close my eyes and I wrapped my arms around my body and moved them up and down, trying to warm myself up. My black leather jacket and blue jeans weren't enough to keep me warm. I started to imagine myself nice and cozy under the new fuzzy black comforter I had just bought.
I guess I had walked past where I was supposed to turn because when I opened my eyes I was right in front of an alleyway I had never seen before. I started looking around to try and understand where I was, but all I could see were buildings that looked abandoned and there wasn't a single car in sight. Where the heck am I, I thought as I turned around to face the alleyway again.
"Can you help me please!" Now I was on the ground with some random blond woman on top of me screaming in my face, not like this is the first time this has happened. If I were an average person I would have no idea what was going on, but the fact being that I wasn't an average person I had a pretty good guess of what was going on. Vampires are more common than one would think.
"Are you okay?" I asked as I tried to stand up, "are you bit?"
"What! No, of course not," she yelled, "but- but this weird woman is chasing me." she pointed to the alley behind her. She then grabbed my shoulders and looked at me with tears in her eyes, "Can you please help me?"
"I can you if you let me get up," I groaned and the woman moved off my legs, "did you see what color their eyes were?" I started to get up.
"Why would I know that?" she looked up at me as she was still sitting up on the sidewalk. Her eyes widened and she looked as if she had seen a ghost, or a vampire, she stood up and started to back away from me. "You're with that creep, aren't you?" she started pointing into the alley.
"No, of course not! I-" I was interrupted by a voice from the alleyway.
"Thank you Valerie for keeping her in one place for me." I turned my head to the right to see who was talking, "She'll make an amazing dinner," I could only see blood red eyes looking back at me, "and I think I'll be saving you for dessert Val." the closer it walked towards me the more I could see its paper white face. I started to run as fast as I could, the woman was already one block ahead of me.
"Stop following me!" she screamed as she ran into an empty building. Why do they always run and hide in dark places? I thought as I walked into the building. There wasn't any door for the entrance and the only light was the blue glowy light of the moon from the windows. I could make out some old wooden stairs with a royal blue rug on it to my left, I could hear creaking coming from upstairs. I started to follow the noise, it must be that lady I thought as I walked up the stairs, padding the pockets of my black leather jacket trying to feel for my silver dagger. As I turned the corner to get to the next set of stairs and I saw a hallway full of doors.
"Hello?" I shouted down the hall pulling my silver dagger out of my jacket.
"What do you want with me?" the woman's voice cried out from the closest door on my
Right. I guess she heard me walking up the stairs. I put my hands over my head and walked in the door.
"I'm not trying to hurt you, here to protect you from that thing outside." I whispered, I took a couple forward and she walked back until her back hit the window. Her eyes were wide open in fear.
"Then why do you have that knife in your hand?" she said with a shaky voice.
"It's for-"
"It's for me." a voice spoke behind me, "she's a vampire hunter and I'm vampire." she said it in an eerily calm voice as if it was a normal thing. I turned around as fast as I could, both hands wrapped around the handle of my dagger, I put my hands over my head and swung them down to stab the monster in front of me. I missed, it had jumped back a couple feet into the dark hallway. "That was a close one there Val, I almost thought you were going to actually kill me." It laughed. I held the dagger in the left hand. I first swung my arm to the left lunging forward and then to the right, slashing its stomach. The monster grabbed its stomach and fell into the wall, blood flowing through its fingers as it winced in pain and fell to its knees. "You humans always think you're the smartest and most pure creature of them all, don't you?"
"No, I don't think so." I barked back, "That's why I'm going to kill you, nice and slow." I jammed my knife back into its bleeding wound causing the monster to scream in pain, it fell onto its side.
"You humans are the real monsters," blood spilling out of its mouth as it talks, "I'm just trying to-" it coughed, leaving blood droplets on my clothes, "I'm just trying to live!" it yelled with blood stained teeth. I finally put my dagger in its heart. Sighed and put my bloody hand on my forehand. I looked back into the doorway, I had forgotten about the woman, she just stood there with her mouth open a little bit.
"Please don't tell anyone about this." I pleaded, she nodded and then bolted down the stairs. "Ugh, now I have to clean this up." I wined, putting my hands on my hips.
