Janet's blood ran cold

Janet's blood ran cold. She waited there for another minute to see, if Avery really comes out all of a sudden from her hiding place and tell her that it was all a prank. Because it all made sense. Avery had made that up before.

But something seemed off this time.

Janet picked up her phone and dialed her number.

'The number you have called is either switched off or not available at the moment... please call again, later. The number...'

Janet threw her phone away in frustration. She plopped on the bed and closed her eyes and soon succumbed to sleep without her knowledge.

She stirred in her sleep when a large crash broke her sleep.

A glass that was kept on the bedside table, fell, and broke due to her hand movements. She woke up with a jolt.

"Shit!" She cursed looking down.

She reached down below and started taking up the broken pieces of the glass. Turning around she reached for her mobile and checked the time.

9:30 in the morning.

"Yeah... very much predictable." She sighed and continued picking up the broken pieces when something caught her eye.

Something like powdery red was sticking to the broken pieces of the glass.

"What the..." She trailed off looking at the red powdery thing.

Millions of questions whirled in her mind. Was the water she was drinking, spiked? Her heart thumped in her chest.

"Hey!"

"AH!" Janet startled before the pieces fell from her hands resulting in more mess than it already was.

"What happened?" Avery came before her worried and asked.

"Huh? Oh, no, nothing... I was just a bit startled."

"That I can see. But why-"

"Was the door open?"

Avery narrowed her eyes at her decision to change the topic, but she decided to remain silent. She moved towards the mobile socket to put her mobile on charging.

"Yes, it was." Avery replied.

Then she moved to the washroom.

By the time Avery came out, Janet had already picked up the pieces. Avery moved to the bedside to unplug her charger when Janet called her.

"Hey, Avery?"

"Hmm?" Avery hummed.

"Where were you in the morning? When I returned to the room, you weren't there. That's why..." Janet explained.

"In case you forgot, I have my semi-finals today evening. So, I went to practice." Avery replied curtly.

Janet felt a sting in her heart, when Avery talked to her in that tone, but she kept her composure cool.
