Chapter 8

3rd person's pov

"Ughhh, I hate Mondays!" Jake whined.

It was a breezy afternoon and school finished around less than an hour. Hailey agreed on meeting Jake, as she had no company left, considering Zander was sick, Luke was his only company and Sean and Milly never stay after the end of classes. Nor did Jake, but he was ready to stay after his usual time, just for Hailey. Friends got each other's backs, right?

"Why does it have to be so far away from Friday?" he mumbled again, looking upwards as he was asking the sky and clouds.

"Hey, you okay?" The peach-haired boy turned his head to his walking companion.

Hailey was staring at a not existing horizon, zoning herself out. She snapped to the sound of Jake's voice.

"Hm? Oh yeah, just thinking." she replied absently.

"Thinkin' about..?" he patiently asked her again.

Hailey stayed silent for a few more moments or so, until she answered Jake's question with a question.

"Do you remember the time when we first met?" she finally looked at him with a small smirk.

"Oh.. wellll.." he sighed in his own disappointment.

"That wasn't my best first impression, was it?" he smiled, embarrassed.

They met for the 1st time in their freshman year. After Hailey forgot her book where she wrote lyrics for songs in Ms. Jones class and Jake managed to give it back to her, the tiny sparks could be felt since the moment they laid eyes on each other. But Jomies just had to ruin it. Jake and Hailey were "the enemies" ever since, but last few months were quite.. interesting when the word is about their friendship.

"It definitely wasn't." Hailey started giggling.
"I mean, seriously, "Disney princess?" you couldn't find a better thing to call me?"

"Do we really need to go back to this? I thought we discussed it already!" Jake made a fake angry look and crossed his arms.

"Yeah, yeah.." chuckling, she rolled her eyes and looked away from him.

Some time of walking passed by again, when Jake's eyes lit up.

"Hey.. I wanted to, kinda.. ask you something?" he said with an unsure expression.

"Go ahead, I'm full ears." she answered almost instantly.

"Sooo, I was thinking.." he continued talking with big pauses and took 1 big breath before finally asking.

"I heard that, there's going to be a meteor shower this Saturday. I thought-"

"Did you just say.. a meteor shower?" Hailey's eyes twinkled like stars. Being the astronomy geek she was, she couldn't believe the words that just came out of his mouth.

"Uhh, yeahh.. you like those..?"
he smiled awkwardly again.

"Like those? I love those!!" the teal-haired girl squealed out of excitement.
"I never truly saw a meteor shower! Of course I'll go with you!!"

"Great!"

...

"Soo, I also found out all people who are coming to see it will gather around our local observatory in park, y'know?"
he paused for a moment to tell Hailey his plan.
"But I had a different idea in my mind. What if.. we went on our hill? You know, the one where we usually have picnics with the rest of the club..?" Jake thought of absolutely no way how to say this, so it doesn't sound like he's asking her out. He failed miserably.

(Don't mind if this sounds like they're making a tradition. Jake asking Hailey to go out with her as a friend, but it turns out it sounds like a date. 👍Anyways, back to the story.)

"Oh.." she put her index finger on her chin.
"Well, sure. I don't mind where we are watching."

"Cool!" the boy smiled so that his eyes squinted, which always resulted in Hailey's blushing.

"I should really start heading home now.." the club president looked aside, admiring all the flowers students from the garden club planted.

"Yeah, I should too.. well, how about we meet up around 7pm on Saturday? There's also going to be a space-themed fair before the event, if you want to come." Jake proposed his new idea.

"Sounds great! It's a dat- I MEAN.. a deal!" she shyly smiled, walking out of the school gate.
"S-see you Jake!"

"Bye Hailey!"

Hailey's mind

"God, what the heck? I almost called our meet up a date! Ugh, this is so embarrassing.." she facepalmed herself.
"I just need to go home before Zander reports to the police that I'm missing."

Hailey's pov

Thankfully, I got home soon, and was surprised who's face I saw when I opened the door of my house.

"HAILEYY!!" Milly literally jumped on me and gave me a tight hug.

"Milly.. you're.. suffocating me.." I barely told her as she wasn't letting go.

"What are doing here?" I asked while rubbing my neck, looking at both Sean and Milly.

"Well, we just wanted to see how Zandy was doing~" the pink-haired devil replied in a baby tone and looked at my step-brother.

"I told you to stop calling me that!" he snapped at the nickname she called him.
"You know that only Luke is allowed to use it." he crossed his arms grumpily while his boyfriend chuckled at that statement.

"Anyways.. we wanted to surprise you with something." Sean stepped out from the rest and smiled at me.

"Since we know how much you love space stuff..." he continued, raising the tension.

"WE'RE GOING TO WATCH A METEOR SHOWER THIS SATURDAY!" Milly was so thrilled about the news she interrupted the senior.
"ISN'T THAT EXCITING?!"

The moment her lips shaped words 'meteor shower' I knew that I had only 2 options.

Option no. 1:
Agree to go with them and inform Jake the rest of the club members will join us.
Conclusion: a pretty good option.

Option no. 2:
Tell them I'm busy and go watch the meteor shower alone with Jake.
Conclusion: not that bad of an option too..

*Sigh*

"I would gladly go with you guys, but.. I'm buried in the assignments I have for the next week. Sorry." I closed my eyes and turned my head down, hoping no one will question anything any further.

"Ohhh, c'mon! This happens once in never!" Milly begged me.

"Actually-" Luke started his nerdy explanation before Sean jumped in.

"No, no, if it's about school, then you should miss out. We'll go another time."
DJ sympathetically smiled.

Even though Zander was suspiciously staring at me, I sighed in relief.

Now I just have to plan how to sneak out..

Author here! Phew, that was one long chapter😅 As you may noticed, the comic short Rosy recently posted was a big inspiration in this part :).

Looks like Hailey prefers to spend her alone time with Jake rather than with all club members together👀✨~
