The end is only one chapter away ...
Chapter 47:
It was a cold place and a shiver ran up my spine. It was hard to breathe in this cold land, dim colors, blue fading – or getting darker, I was not sure... It was vacant, just an echo of sounds I could not understand or figure them out.
I glanced to my side and saw an empty room - that in the operating room - with a body lying dead and blue on the table in the middle. It got harder to breathe and became colder once my eyes were fixed upon the face. The structures, the closed eyes, the jaw, the veins drawn on the eyelids and the blue color painted on the short – squared – nails.
The body silenced my beating heart when I noticed that body was mine... it was my body.
Lights exploded in the room, and brightness nearly blinded my sight. Heart monitors started to beep all at once, but at the same rate – that sound in which it informs the world that a heart is no longer beating.
Save her, a voice whispered in my ear and another shiver ran up and down. I was confused because I was supposed to be saved but nothing was moving, and no one was there to stop the heart monitor from the constant sounds that shrilled my brain.
But it was serene and it feared me. Almost like death was the only peaceful and most fearless thing to go experience once in a lifetime.
Silence and darkness brought peace into my cold heart as a gap wide open, vacuumed icy air into my lungs, hurting my every joint. I was standing right in front of my lying body, before I heard her sobs in my ear.
Please, her voice echoed in the room and a phone began to ring loudly.
"Raquel?" I tried to speak but my mind was the only thing that was able to emit a voice, because my lungs felt like they were being blended with the bones of my ribcage.
Save her, her whispers only brought aches into my silent heart. Zayn, the phone rings grew louder before I saw a dark silhouette from afar, approaching with its hand stretched to the front and in my direction. The long hair appeared, draped over her shoulders but there was no face and the closer the body approached, the louder the phone rang.
7 broken mirrors, the figure whispered and the black face vanished.
I wake up, panting and sensing my body drenched in sweat because the back of my shirt is cold on my skin. The phone under the pillow is vibrating violently and I exhale vigorously before I slide my hand and snatch the phone from under. Such a ridiculous phone I'm carrying. It's a baby Nokia.
Reading the foreign number on this small screen, I squint once more until the phone stops ringing. I furrow my eyebrows and I'm baffled to read that it is now 12:30 in the afternoon and I still have one hour and thirty minutes to start my p.m. shift at the library.
Do I really want to go back to that hideous place?
In three weeks, it will all be over.
I remind myself before the phone once again starts to vibrate in my palm and the same number appears on my screen.
"Hello?" I cough while answering, trying to erase the soreness hogging my throat.
"Yes, hello," an unfamiliar male voice replies and I furrow my eyebrows. "Zayn, right?"
"Yeah, who's this?"
"Mr. Rockefeller." He replies and a cube of ice is thrown at the pit of my stomach. I swear, from the minute I met that man, I believed he was only asking for anything but good.
