At Lunch, I found Danielle and she waved me down. She patted the seat next to her, "Saved you a spot, no need to thank me." I laughed and clanked my lunch tray down.
"Thanks," Looking around the table it was the girls from before. Sophia was one of them but now there were more. I felt out of place. They all wore expensive attire and fancy makeup with elegant shades on their heads, freshly made Starbucks cups with their minimal lunches, and they all had flat ironed hair.
They all glanced at me with a judgemental up-and-down stare that Danielle seemed to be completely obvious too. "I hope you guys don't mind if Y/N sits with us."
Sophia chimed in with her abruptly fake smile and bittersweet voice, "Not all, girlie!" Danielle smiled at me as if it was progress for me to have new friends.
It wasn't.
All of lunch I felt excluded. The girls talked among themselves and Danielle so I couldn't talk to her and occasionally I'd catch them looking in my direction. I'd meet eye contact with one of them, they'd smile and then turn to their friend and whisper something. I didn't like the whispering. That was until one of Sophia's friends who had auburn hair and expensive gold bracelets leaned over to talk to me.
"So, Y/N right?" Her valley accent almost sickened me because she didn't sound genuine. I couldn't call her out because it was a little thing so I stayed quiet.
"Yeah," I shyly answered.
"You're like so punk and rugged." She smiled.
"Oh thank you-"
"I bet you get women drooling all over your masculine aesthetic!" She giggled bittersweetly. I hesitated at her seemingly backhanded comment yet the words weren't mean. I shouldn't take it rudely, it's okay to be gay or somewhere in between but coming from her it felt different. Is it wrong somehow to even appear gay? That didn't seem right at all. Are they being homophobic? Are they genuinely confused about my sexuality?
I was confused so smiled awkwardly and said, "Oh, thanks but I'm straight,"
She looked at her friends and the surrounding girls stifled a giggle. "I'm so sorry! I didn't know you look so..." She trailed off and laughed to her friends, "Stop! Guys you're being mean!" Everyone seemed to get the joke yet I didn't. I awkwardly laughed along as I slowly became more self-conscious.
Danielle piped up, "There just teasing,"
"Are they?"
She paused momentarily and smiled weakly, "Yeah, just jokes," I wasn't convinced but let it go. This was her crowd after all so she had to know them best.
"I'll be right back," I waved to Danielle. She nodded and continued her mind-numbing conversation with her friends. I rubbed my temple while crossing the crowded cafeteria to find someone else familiar. Leo and Jaxon were the only people I knew besides Danielle and I certainly wasn't up for finding Jaxon. I tried to find Leo but I decided against walking up to him because of the overcrowded table of loud jocks near him.
Walking into the hallway with no particular direction other than mindless wandering. With no purpose to be in the bathroom, I wandered in there. Two girls were seated on the floor of the bathroom, laughing and yelling at each other.
They paused when they saw me; one of them with purple hair and a silver nose ring nudged her friend. "That's the girl who totaled Jaxon." She got off the floor and casually leaned her arm across my shoulder. "I didn't believe that someone could leave Jaxon breathless but I stand corrected."
The other one with straight blonde hair and a revealing pink crop laughed alongside her friend. "We tip our crown to you,"
"Thank you?" I asked confused and overwhelmed.
