Monday

Seth never showed to the kid's party. He texted to say he forgot about an appointment he made. I didn't think twice, until Monday rolled around.

Sunday, I had been preparing for the group meeting on Monday. I baked brownies. Melody gave me a heads up that she heard one of the group members, Jim, was having a surprise birthday party after the meeting – as he had no family or friends and had had no plans. Audrey and Lynda had been secretly planning the surprise, and Melody had found out.

Then Monday morning rolled around and Seth sent out a group email expressing he wouldn't be attending therapy this week due to unforeseen circumstances, but he'd do his best to return when he was available. It was professional and clean. He apologised; he sounded fine in the email.

But my heart dropped when Seth announced this.

Melody also read it with me and she saw my reaction – and she was furious.

"He's got something on," I murmur, feeling lost as I pace up and down the kitchen, haphazardly cleaning the dishes while I speak, "No worries at all – um, it's expected, life happens and –"

"My gut says otherwise," Melody cuts me off with a low growl, "This is bullshit."

"He's avoiding me, isn't he?" I whisper, dropping the tea towel and spinning to her, feeling my gut twist, "It's my fault. He's my therapist and I've been – I asked for his number and he's realised he doesn't like me – it's too awkward to come back to the group. I ruined everything. I ruined the group."

"Listen," Melody pinches the bridge of her nose as she closes her eyes and exhales deeply, "This is a werewolf thing – and I'm going to explain why," Melody opens her eyes and glares at me with her natural passion, "I know from the scents and smells I have scented, floating around between you two – that the chemistry is real. That's not a fantasy, it's not in my head – every wolf can smell it. The point I'm making now, is that Seth isn't showing up, because he's got some personal issues."

"Do you know anything about his problems?" I ask, hopeful she's heard something somewhere along the gossip train.

"I got nothing. I don't know why a fit, hot Alpha – is single and has any problems. On that, I'm stumped, I'll admit," Melody jumps from her stool and picks up her car keys, "But," she turns to me, "The meeting starts in ten hours. We have time to track him down. Do you know where he lives?"

"No."

"Neither do I, but we'll find him," Melody starts to smile, "I think I know where Seth is anyway."

"Have you been stalking him?" I whisper.

"No," Melody's mouth twitches as she tries not to grin, "Let's get in the car – we're going for a drive."

"To do what?" I blink, "Seth doesn't want to see me, that's clear – he hasn't even sent me a personal text to explain. He's avoiding me, Melody. Clear as day. I did something wrong."

"Every argument I've had with Bryon has been a stupid misunderstanding," Melody almost starts to yell, "This isn't happening with you and Seth. I won't allow it!"

"We're not a couple!" I yell, "We're not even –"

"Even so, even if you're just friends – we're going to find out if he needs help," Melody tries to reason it, "Now come on," Melody grabs her bag and then she turns to me, "Come on."

"You're nuts," I murmur as I quickly find some shoes to slip on.

I'm only wearing a pink tank top and beige sweats.

I put on my old sneakers, they're falling apart.

I also grab my hair and I brush it out, but I don't tie it up.
