A warm, humid breath slithered down the nape of my neck as I stirred awake. Joel was snuggled up behind me, a manly arm wrapped around my bare waist as I felt his chest rise and fall against my back.

I almost thought last night was some sort of dream, I still can't quite wrap my head around how easily everything went between us. There wasn't that awkward will he won't he phase, it just happened. And now we've experienced the most intimate possible thing you can do with another person.

I've always had a looming thought of death, that a clicker could burst in and rip my neck out at any given moment. I could contract cancer, I could have a heart attack, the house could collapse, a meteor could blow apart the earth. But as of this moment, I feel... safe. Like nothing can hurt me. I don't want to get up, but I know we probably should if we want to make it to Oregon on time.

I stirred a bit before before Joel suddenly spoke,
"Mornin'." He said,
"Jesus fuck!" I shouted, nearly jumping out of my skin as he scoffed. "Morning to you too."
"You're quite the screamer ain't you?"
"Is that an insult or a compliment?" I ask,
"An observation."
"Well observe the door, we need to get on the road."

Joel and I peed outside, slipped on our clothes, and then we were back at it. The light of day enhanced the deterioration of this neighborhood, with vines coating and crawling up walls, broken windows, holes in the walls, and missing doors, all to create what looks like a whisper of a cul-de-sac.

Things are moving quickly, not a week has gone by and we're already kissing on each other like we're married. I think Cordyceps has made dating, and life as a whole a lot less complicated. Before I was told- by my dad. That you'd spend a long chunk of time with someone until you even get the first kiss. Seems almost foreign the idea, why waste time?

"Y'know this is probably my best couple a' days in a long while," Joel said, looking up through the trees into the sky.

"This is the first time in three years I've spent more than an hour with anyone

"This is the first time in three years I've spent more than an hour with anyone. Without killin' them." I replied, admiring him. He really is handsome, even if he's a bit old. Still not older than my dad though- I'm pretty sure dating someone older than your dad is where the line is drawn right?
"You say you're from Oregon, why were you in Denver?" Joel asks,
"I was responding to a distress signal. Owed some people a few favors."
"What was the signal?" Joel inquired,
"A few people tried to call in, died before I got there."
"Who was the last person?" Joel asks, once again throwing me off.
"What?"
"You said the last person you spent time with was three years ago, who were they?"
"I don't wanna talk about it." Joel opened his mouth like he was about to say something, then stopped. And we walked for a brief minute in silence.
