AUGUSTINE POV

I was just about to fall asleep when I heard my name. I sat up. "Yeah?"

"Oh, sorry if I woke you up." Winnie said.

"No, you're fine. I was awake." I lied. "What's the matter?"

"I .. nothing." Winnie replied. I heard him shift around. Comfort wasn't the top priority with tents, but it's not like we have a full on RV.

I grabbed my phone. 12:43am. Perhaps we could go fish tomorrow, or collect random stuff. I like collecting stuff. Pine cones, and leaves.

"I can't sleep." Winnie said quietly. I smiled a bit, sitting up.

"Well, we can just talk then if you want." I grin at him. He turns to face me, still lying down.

"Okay. Uhm .. do you like anybody?"

I froze, completely paralyzed with fear. Unable to move. "What?" I croaked.

"Do you like anybody?" Winnie repeated. He sounded a bit nervous. Why? Around me?

I stare at him, tilting my head slightly. I finally shake my head. "No .. no. No, I don't. No." I'm not sure why I felt the need to say no so many times, but I did.

"Oh."

He sounded slightly disappointed. I couldn't really see him in the dark, so I couldn't tell what Winnie was thinking. I couldn't tell what he was necessarily feeling, either.

The lantern flicked on. I flinched, blinking. Once I got adjusted to the brightness Winnie laughed.

"It's not that bright, Auggie!" He said.

I shook my head, giving him a small smile. "It's quite bright, considering we were in the pitch black." I pause. "Why did you ask me if I liked someone?"

Winnie's expression went unreadable. He was frigid. "Uhm .. just curious." He tilted his head to the side, giving me a smile. It seemed forced. I'm not a psychic, but he looked like he was lying.

"Sure." I say, giving Winnie a suspicious glance.

"I swear! I was just curious. You know, considering you don't uh .. have a girlfriend." Winnie replied.

"I don't want a girlfriend."

"Oh. I thought .."

"No. There's more than just girlfriends. Or boyfriends." I add, trying to sound more inclusive.

Winnie still looked unreadable. I couldn't tell what he was thinking, at all. "Yeah. You're right." He said. Winnie was staring at me.

Probably lost in thought. Or dazed. I pondered. Winnie tilted his head to the side, glanced up at me, and grinned.

He shook his head and leaned back. "Sorry. Uh, spaced out. You should probably go to sleep." He looked down at his phone. "It's 1:11am."

"Okay. I guess. Goodnight, Winnie." I looked up at him and smiled. He returned the gesture, and it became pitch black. I laid back down in my sleeping bag. It wasn't too cold or too hot, in the beginning of summer at least.

I looked up at the ceiling of the tent. It was blue. Winnie's favorite color. He loved blue. It was pretty.

I turned to face Winnie. He was facing the other side, so all I saw was his back. At least I have all summer with him. It'll be fun.
