We all left the tree house at the same time. We all went home to get some stuff ready for the trip. I had to sneak past my dad to make sure he didn't see me. I grabbed my sleeping bag and a bottle and filled it with water. I changed my shirt from the one I had on in the tree house. I dreamed of being in the army. But I know for a fact that my eyes and ear will hold me back. When my father was drunk he held my ear to a stove and almost burnt the thing off. As I was almost done getting ready my father stopped right in front of me. "Where the hell do you think your going?" he yelled at me. I wasn't sure what to say. "Uhh, I'm sleeping over Vern's. Then going to see a drag race tomorrow." I said. "All right then." He walked away drinking a beer and smoking."
"What do we need a gun for anyways?" Vern asks Chris. Chris took a gun off of his dad's dresser. "Well, we will be sleeping in the woods, we might see a bear." "Or a trash can." Chris and Gordie laugh. I'm not sure what they meant, but something must of happened before we met up. As we followed the tracks we saw a bridge. "Just follow the racks from here it might be around 30 miles. That sound about right to you Gordie?" "Yeah. Might even be 40." "Geesh, maybe we should just hick hike." "No that sucks Vern." I said to him. "Why? Just find a car, follow a road, end up at the Back Harlow road by sundown." Vern said. "No that's pussy." "What no it's not." "Did your mother ever have any children that lived?" "What do you mean?" "Ugh" We continued walking. And we all knew the next day or two would be a long time.
