Kate Carmichael hopped out of her dad's car and ran onto the school yard. She breathed a sigh of relief. She wasn't late. For once. Butterflies flittered around in her stomach. She still couldn't believe she was in HIGH SCHOOL. She looked around at her peers. Everyone just seemed so much older than they were in eighth grade. There was Sophie Allen, looking around nervously and shoving a piece of paper into her book bag. She looked like she'd grown EVEN TALLER over the summer. She saw Persephone Waters, her earbuds in her ears, singing quietly to herself. Kate rolled her eyes. She hated how Persephone was so.... perfect. Yeah, sure, they used to be besties, but that was before she rose to the top on their school pyramid, not even glancing at the peasants bellow her. And there was Julia Meyers, twirling her hair and batting her eyelashes at a senior boy. Kate snorted. Well SHE sure changed. Kate couldn't recall seeing Julia ever have the courage to talk to a boy, especially one three years older than her. And last but not least, she saw Marisa Dell, her brunette curls spilling gracefully down her back, talking to Lucy Rider and Petra Blackhorse, two other girls in their grade. Kate turned around. Then realization washed over her. Wait did she just see MARISA? Kate whirled around. There were those curls again. She ran up. Her heart raced. Could Marisa really be back? Kate grabbed her shoulders, turning her around. But it wasn't Marisa. It was just Gwyn Lyfe. She looked startled.
"Oh, hey Kate." She chirped, a grin coming across her face. Ugh, SO peppy.
"Hey." Kate said blandly, sighing. Gwyn had always annoyed the crap out of her. She was always so happy and innocent. Why couldn't Kate be more like her? All of a sudden, her phone beeped. She pulled it out. "ONE NEW TEXT MESSAGE" her phone said in its robotic voice. Kate opened it up. Her eyebrows knitted together in confusion. It was from a blocked number. She read the text.
Kate-
Tsk tsk! Always wanting what someone else has. But you know what I say, Jealously kills. And believe me, it has before. -A
