The year is 1989, the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc is in a political turmoil as more and more people demand its political freedom and abolishment of communist party's rule within their country. Some within the Soviet Union such as the Baltic State and Caucasus even demand their independence. It is clear that soon the Cold War would come to a conclusion with the collapse of the Iron Curtain and even the USSR itself. This upset a lot of government officials and most importantly the Politburo which led to secret meetings between high ranking Soviet officials within the government and military to discuss how to save the Eastern Bloc or at least the USSR from collapsing entirely. After an hour long discussion they come to the same conclusion ; if they can't save the Eastern Bloc politically, then they must do it militarily. After planning for several weeks, the aforementioned Soviet official launched a surprise coup and expelled Gorbarchev, declared a state of emergency and ordered Soviet troops to suppress any unrest within the Eastern Bloc by any means possible. This action created backlash from the United Nations and especially the US who go as far as to cut their financial aid to the USSR and demand USSR to cease their action immediately. Even though Soviet troops are able to compromise in some areas, hotspots such as East Germany and Poland require extensive use of force to finally bring down civil unrest and stabilize the situation within the said country.

July 1991, two years after the Soviet coup.

Even though the USSR succeeded in reestablishing their control within the Eastern Bloc state and was able to suppress various civil unrest within their country they knew it wouldn't last long. Sanctions from the UN led to economic decline and a new wave of civil unrest is coming over the horizon which they wouldn't be able to contain judging from various factors. Even though the Supreme Soviet did have a widespread political and economic reform plan which would hopefully stabilize the situation they still needed more time to make it work. Wouldn't it be nice if something big suddenly happens and distracts everybody's attention so they get more time?

By a stroke of luck, something did happen but it's not in the way that anybody could predict. Around late July in the Polish city of Poznan, some weird big gate suddenly appeared on the outskirts of the city and within an hour the situation went downhill really fast. The Polish government received reports of some unidentified army attacking Poznan and nearby towns, killing some civilians. Panicked Polish Government immediately mobilized their army and called for the USSR to help. The exact information of the Battle of Poznan couldn't be extracted but all the public know is that the Soviet army along with their Polish counterpart pushed an unidentified army out of the vicinity of Poznan before they encircled said army and pushed them back to the "Gate" before the fighting stopped entirely. This incident would be known as the Poznan incident and cause the reaction worldwide. The Soviet government saw the opportunity to distract both the Western world and public from economic turmoil within their country and this would allow them to secretly push out the much needed reform. Thus the emergency meeting was called between the Warsaw Pact nation which in the end, would lead to USSR led intervention to the other side of the "Gate".
