Prologue

A man walks home from work in the rain, holding a black umbrella. His dark eyes focused on the horizon, determined to make his destination. He almost didn't catch the flash of color pass by at the corner of his eye, the blur running into the dark alleyway. The man glanced around the empty streets before following into the alleyway, where the pale russet blob had hidden under a dumpster. The man knelt down, holding his cane with one hand and the umbrella tucked in between his neck and shoulder.

The man clicks his tongue, a hand slowly going underneath the dumpster. There was a low growl as the man retracts his gloved hand. Whatever was under there was scared.

"I'm not going to hurt you." The man murmurs, voice sharp yet soothing.

Wiggling his fingers, a large muzzle poked through and gently sniffed at them before slowly poking out its head, its collar jingling as it moved. Wary and tired blue eyes looked up at the man, feeling eerie familiar and far too human.

"You must have been though a lot..." the man murmured sympathetically, though he felt a bit stupid for talking to a cat like it was a person, "I know how that feels. Come on, you shouldn't be out here in the rain."

Blue eyes blinked slowly at the man, before glancing down at his hand. Finally, it pulled itself out from under the dumpster, its fur damp and dirty. The collar on its neck was a horrendous shade of bright yellow.

If it were up to the man himself, he would've gone for more muted colors. Or maybe blue to match the color of the cat's eyes. The man grimaces at the collar, but spends a bit of time letting the cat rub its fluffy head against his gloved hand and sniffing at his dark red trench coat. It meows at him, letting the man scratch behind its ears and under its chin.

It's too dark to read the the engraving on the collar's tag.

It doesn't really matter though, because the large cat practically leaps onto his lap and makes the man almost drop his umbrella. He grunts and struggles to get back up, hip throbbing as he does. Juggling the cat cradled in his free arm and the black umbrella tucked between his neck and shoulder, he shifts to get into a more comfortable hold on his things.

The man thinks of his boyfriend, who has a cat of his own. He can only imagine that his boyfriend would claim that the cat has 'chosen' him. It makes the man roll his eyes with a fond chuckle, purring cat on his arms as the man makes his way home in the rain.

The cat leaps down as soon as the man manages to get the door open. It patters into the darkness of his home, letting out a meow as it watches the man walk in. After turning on the lights, man rests his cane against the wall before sitting down to take off his shows. He gives the cat a scratch on the head before getting back up again, hip throbbing lightly.

The man goes to take off his dirty trench coat and puts it in the hamper, then he takes off his grey suit jacket. The stray cat had followed him, watching the man with a tilted head. Not wanting the cat to get on the bed, the man picks up the cat and carries it to the living room. After setting it down, he heads to the kitchen, letting the cat explore his home.

In the meantime, the man texts his boyfriend while searching for something the cat could eat. He owned insects but he's never cared for a cat before. Finally, he finds a tin of tuna.

It was better than nothing. That stray cat must be hungry.

The sound of the can cracking open had the cat darting over like a pale russet canon ball, meowing loudly as it circled around the man. He quickly puts some of it in a dish before setting it down for the cat to devour. As it happy noms down on stinky tuna, the man goes to reheat some food in the fridge for dinner. The cat had finished its meal quickly and the man, with a damp napkin, wiped the cat's mouth before petting it again. The cat purred, happily butting its head into his hand.

The man chuckled, scratching the cat's chin. Remembering the tag, he goes to grab the square-shaped tag, tilting it to get a good look in its engraving.

"Primso...huh...?"
