"So we can get...whatever we want?" a fourteen-year-old Y/N asked, his eyes widened in awe as he looked around.
His father ruffled his hair, chuckling. "Yes, sport, you and Seo-Hyun can get whatever you want."
A fourteen-year-old Seo-Hyun glanced around, her mouth slightly agape as she took in the store they had stopped at on their way to Y/N's relatives' home. "Anything?" she echoed.
Her mother chuckled as she patted her daughter's head affectionately. "Like Mr. L/N said, darling, anything. But stick close to each other, okay? You don't have to be next to each other, but be close."
The two teenagers shared looks before they darted off to check out what the store had in store for them. Seo-Hyun got five perfume bottles and a plushie while Y/N got a soccer keychain and a water bottle — typical vacation stuff.
"You're gonna be paying for your stuff, right?" he asked her when they'd finished getting the stuff they wanted.
Seo-Hyun looked at him with widened eyes, and Y/N then asked, "You do have money, right?"
Seo-Hyun shook her head. "No..."
Y/N let out a frustrated sigh as he took out his wallet. "How much for the perfume bottles?" he asked the cashier, pointing at the bottles.
Seo-Hyun's eyes widened as she realized what Y/N was doing. "O-oh, no, Y/N, you don't have to do that — I'll just...uh...put them back..." She outstretched her hands to reach for the perfume bottles.
Y/N rolled his eyes. "I know I don't have to, moron. I want to." He paused for a moment before adding, "Just...bring your own money next time, okay?"
Seo-Hyun, still taking in what was happening, slowly nodded her head, her eyes widened, her cheeks turning pink at the thought of her long-time crush paying for her. "U-uh...huh..."
"You two make a really cute couple, you know," the cashier remarked as Y/N handed her the money.
"What?" Y/N blinked confusedly a few times before the realization hit him. "Oh — no, ma'am, we're not a couple," he added hastily. "She's just a friend."
'Ah. Right.' Seo-Hyun felt another crack in her heart as he said the words. 'Just...friends.'
It wasn't his fault, though — he couldn't help how he felt.
If she was just a friend to him, fine.
But that didn't mean it had to hurt any less.
