Travelling the road were the families that had long ago been chosen to risk their lives with the hope of saving the world from it's imminent destruction. Families that have spent generations longing to be the ones to save the world from itself.
So how did it come to this? Good question.
*About 300 years ago*
Screams. All there was was screams. Screams so utterly terrified you couldn't think of anything else. Screams so ear-shattering your eyes could not bring themselves to see, mouth unable to taste, skin unable to feel, nose unable to smell.
But then something happened. All of a sudden, it all stopped. Very few were suddenly able to see, hear, smell, feel, and taste.
"You have been selected to compete in a race to save the all those still living. You have been selected to follow the Road to solve clues and riddles for generations. Those who don't accept, well, those not selected will suffer for your decision," said the mysterious voice we now know as the Ageless One. "So what is your choice?"
And so, of course, those who had been selected accepted, and their ancestors have been following the Road ever since.
