The alleyway felt surreal the way the buildings loomed over me.
Going at a slow run, I made my way down the crate cement path all the while taking note of my surroundings.
Including the concrete wall of one of the building's farther down the alley, there was an indent in the wall where a side door probably was.
I couldn't tell due to how dimly lit the alley was; if it wasn't for the street lights on either end of the alley and the old-looking light above the door to the neighboring building, I wouldn't have been able to see the shapes of the dumpsters and other unidentifiable objects.
As I made my way towards the indent, I could have sworn I saw a shadow of a figure move away from the light above.
It caused me to slow my pace, and I could feel Mystic's claws dig into my shoulder as a low growl emitted from her.
I was about to pass the door when suddenly I heard shuffling and an arm shot out of the dark, grabbing me by my shirt and shoving me against the neighboring building.
It happened so fast that I couldn't think my mind was scattered. I stared at the figure holding me against the wall as the light above us flickered, obscuring the person's face with shadow.
As I took another deep breath, I felt something sharp against my neck. I didn't need to see it to know what it was.
I was frozen in sudden fear, not knowing what this person wanted. I could handle a hand full of things, but this wasn't one of them.
I couldn't think this one through, but I found that it wouldn't be necessary as the rest seemed to play out in slow motion.
Mystic quickly jumped off of my shoulder and out of the backpack, letting out a bone chilling sound followed up by hiss's and growling as she landed on the person, knocking them onto the ground.
I stood there for what felt like hours, taking in deep breaths, until my adrenaline finally did its thing, and the only thing on my mind was my familiar's safety.
scrambling to get her away from the danger. I yanked her off the person and caught a glimpse of the dark figure swinging their knife up at her.
{This person was trying to hurt my familiar!}
Anger washed over me as I was finally able to put together what to do.
Every fiber in my body wanted to take that knife away from the person and kick the shit out of em, while scolding them for trying to hurt my familiar, but I knew I wasn't strong enough to handle this, and I would end up putting us in more danger if I tried.
So to buy us some time, I held Mystic close and kicked the jagoff square in the jaw with my boot.
I heard his teeth click together as he dropped his knife and reached for his jaw to assess the damage.
While he was distracted, I ran for the other end of the alleyway, holding Mystic close, and started praying to whatever may have been watching that we didn't miss the bus.
As I got closer to the end, I noticed the light back in the alley flickering on and off rapidly, getting quicker by the second, until I heard a loud pop followed by glass hitting the ground.
