Chapter Four
Vic smiled, pulled her in for one last kiss and then left the bunk room. She made her way downstairs after taking a moment to compose herself. She saw that the group was still all together, and she went up to Maya, "What the fuck is your problem, Bishop?" Vic said, not caring about her language in front of the chief right now.
"I think I already told you," Maya said, rolling her eyes.
"Bishop," Ross started. "I need you to calm down."
"But I deserve Captain Chief Ross." Maya pleaded.
Ross sighed "Bishop, I need you to settle down. I've already made this decision. I'm not changing my mind. Once I make a decision, I stick to it."
"Please Chief. I deserve this." Maya begged.
"Herrera deserves it. Looking at her record it shows a mistake or two but none that warranted you getting promoted before her. Especially when in your first couple of months as captain you had already lost control of the house." Maya looked taken aback and Vic smirked inwardly.
"What are you talking about?" Maya looked around the room and saw that Jack was looking down and everyone else was avoiding eye contact. "Hello? Does anyone care to loop me in?"
Vic was about to answer when she heard footsteps coming down the stairs. She turned around and saw her girlfriend, a fresh face with no makeup on and with her hair tied up. She looked like the strong firefighter she fell in love with, and she felt herself smile and wanting to kiss her but obviously held back in front of everyone.
"It's amazing how innocent you act about Rigo Vasquez," Andy said, rolling her eyes and finishing the trip down the stairs.
"Oh, do not put that on me," Maya said, walking closer to Andy.
"Why shouldn't I?" Andy challenged, closing the gap between them.
"Because it wasn't my fault," Maya said in a huff.
"Okay, I think we're getting off track here," Travis said, trying to butt in but neither girl paid attention.
"Oh. Really? Not your fault? You paired them to work together when you knew Rigo had punched Jack for sleeping with his wife! How is that being a good captain? That's barely being a good firefighter because anyone knows that if two firefighters don't get along, you DO NOT pair them together! Anyone with common sense fucking knows that." Andy finished, a smirk on her face as she stood beside Vic.
"Alright Captain Herrera, I think that's enough," Ross said, moving between them. "Herrera. Go home for the rest of the shift. Lieutenant Bishop, I need to ask you a question and I need a simple 'yes' or 'no' answer." Andy huffed and walked up the stairs, grabbing her stuff and then leaving through the barn, walking past everyone without saying a word.
Once she was gone Maya just nodded her head in agreement.
"I need to know if you can work with her," Ross asked her.
Maya looked to the ground, not looking at anyone and sighed. She tried to think of the pros and cons of having to work under her so-called friend and sighed. She figured that working under her was better than not working at all. "Yes," Maya answered.
"Good. Now, all of you get back to work. I'll come and see how you're doing in a week or so." Ross told the group and walked past the group and walked out through the front door.
Once the team was sure she was gone they all turned around to see that Maya had a look of shock on her face.
Travis stepped up and tried to speak. "Maya..." was all he was able to get out before Maya walked away from the group. Travis looked around and his eyes stopped at Jack's. "Jack, do you..."
"She won't listen to me." Jack immediately spoke. "Just leave her be. The shift is over in a couple of hours, and she'll be able to go home to Carina and she can listen to her wife rant about how unfair Andy getting promoted over her is." Jack finished and looked at Vic. "How long has she been feeling depressed at station 23?"
Vic looked surprised by the question and Travis ended up answering.
"From what I got from the conversation we had in the conference room it's been months, at least. We should've noticed sooner that she wasn't okay."
"Stop it, Trav." Vic interrupted. "If anyone's to blame for not noticing it's me." Vic sighed. "I know her the best out of all of us. I should've noticed that something was off. Her eyes hold like no life in them anymore and I don't know how I didn't recognize that. It's the same look she had after Ryan died and was closed off."
"Vic, you know Andy is good at hiding her emotions, sometimes better than others but nonetheless, she's good at it."
Vic just nodded. "Well, I should get to stocking and cleaning the aid car." Vic didn't wait for anyone to say anything and just walked into the barn and to the air car. She got into the back and closed the doors, sighing, happy to be away from everyone. Holy fuck was that eventful. Vic breathed out. Really hope Andy is going to be okay alone at her apartment. Vic thought, concerned that Andy would get caught up in her thoughts and that they'd turn bad. Fuck. Maybe I should've gone home with her.
