Everyone stood in uncomfortable silence. I felt the clothes of late shoppers brushing against me. The chatter and complaining—just echoes from the dead. Ganè was in tears when he told me, which I can only imagine was made worse every time he patrolled at night.

But that wasn’t all—Ganè had a request for me, which made Cynaline so upset that he locked himself in the pool room.

“Come on, Cynaline!” Dorothy knocked on the door. “Maybe we can get it back another day.”

There was no response.

“Cynaline? Did you hear me?”

The small speaker beside it beeped, and a plain voice came out. “Whoops. The soundproofing was on. Anyway, I don’t think we can get it back after he gives it to the Mind Knights.”

She looked at Mobi. “What are Mind Knights, exactly?”

“They’re Zarcrotian defenders,” Mobi explained. “Like a military. Some of them just walk around the Mind sometimes.”

“How much are Incarnates worth?” I asked.

He shrugged. “Beats me. They’re priceless.”

“Shoot. They’ll probably just keep them, then.”

Mobi’s phone vibrated in his pocket.

“That’s my alarm,” he said. “I should leave before Zinoray knows I’m gone, He thinks I’m sleeping.”

“Wait, what’s eight o’clock in Earth time?” I asked.

He typed something on his phone. “Twelve in the afternoon.”

“So we need to wake up a little earlier, tomorrow, before Gané arrives.”

“You're actually gonna give him the Incarnate instead?”

“I don’t know! I don’t know what any of this means. That’s just what he wants me to do. And he has a good reason.”

He sighed. “Ziny’s an adult. He’ll understand. Hopefully. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He pulled out his teleporter and vanished.

Jamie banged on the pool room door. “Still alive in there?”

After a few quiet minutes, the door burst opened. Cynaline rushed inside the bedroom, grinning.

“I have an idea!” he gushed. “I can't tell you. But it's a good one… if it works.”
