The drive from Oregon to Nevada was long.
It was a little bit more than 15 hours to get there by car. Now Vegas is not a total mystery to us, we have visited before, our aunt Lisa lives there, she's mom's older sister. Aunt Lisa is quite the girl boss, she opened up a restaurant and is working on opening up a new location on the oh so famous Las Vegas strip. Mom has been wanting to move to Vegas to be closer to her only living relative and seeing as Dad landed a new job teaching at a university, boom! here we are, the Owens are Vegas bound.
As happy as I am for the move, I'm curious about a lot of thing though. What do I expect? I have million scenarios whirling in my head, good and bad. I just hope this new home and new city is a good fit for us.
I don't want to feel out of place at my new school. I've been home schooled my whole life so I'm both terrified and excited to actually go to school, with actual peers. I'm a tad bit lacking in the high school experience category, but I'm going in with an open mind. I am going to try to make the most of it, regardless of I make friends or not. I'll have my family, which to me is all I truly need.
I'm pulled out of my thoughts as my brothers are obnoxiously singing with Matty on the aux cord, they seem to have made it a karaoke car drive. There is never a dull moment with my brothers, I love them to pieces. But of course, brothers are protective, its a real pain when it comes to my love life, or lack thereof. Which needles to say is actually their fault, but I get it. They don't want to see me get hurt, and much as I love them for it, at some point it ought to happen right? That's life.
My phone dings as I get a text from my mom. I sit up and tap Matt's shoulder and signal to lower the volume.
"Take the next exit, lets get something to eat, and pump gas" I read the text aloud.
"About time, I'm starving!" Matt said while rubbing his stomach.
"Tell me about it, aye Matt you're taking the wheel next, I need a rest" Johnny yawned, as he switched over to the exit lane after my dad's truck.
"Yeah yeah, I got you" Matty assured.
We followed dad as he pulled into an In-N-Out. We parked and headed inside. I checked the time, fifteen past one in the morning, five hours down, about ten or so to go. Dad ordered our meals, making sure to order a few extra burgers since my brothers' stomachs were pretty much an bottomless pit. Our food was ready fairly quick, we were filling our cups when they called out our order. As soon as the trays hit the table, we dug in. I'm not a huge fast food person, but I love me some In-N-Out, by far the best burger place in my opinion. Matty and Johnny inhaled their burgers in no time, while I was stuffed and had to offer them my remaining fries, which they gladly took. I sat sipping on my lemonade as the rest of my family finished eating. Once everyone was finished we cleaned up and were read to go, Matty refilled his cup with coke to help him sty up while driving and mom thanked the employees as we walked out.
"Hey Johnny, do you want to take the back seat so that you can nap a bit?" I offer before we get in the car.
"You sure, Chels? Aren't you tired?" He asked.
"No I already slept a bit, I can keep Matty company and make sure he doesn't fall asleep while driving." I reassure, he looks beat.
"Alright then, thanks," he accepts while yawning loud.
Matty unlocks the car and we all get in, he started the engine and we pull out of the In-N-Out and into a gas station. While Matty fills the tank, I distinctly hear soft snores coming from the backseat. Johnny was out like a light in less than five minutes. Soon after, Matty gets back in the car and we're on the road again, this time with me on the aux.Let's just say Matty and I jammed out to my Disney playlist all throughout the night.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Wooohooooo! We're in Vegas baby!" Matty cheers, turning down the music as we enter into city limits.
At last, many hours and pit stops later, we had finally made it to the city which we will now call home. Though I am utterly exhausted, I can feel the excitement bubbling up inside me. I eagerly sat at the end of my seat, turning to look out the window. This moment has to be documented, the Owens have made it to sin city. I take my phone from the armrest console and smile big for quick selfie.
"mmhhuh be quiet.." Johnny mumbles from the backseat, that boy is always sleeping in.
"G'morning princess" Matty chirps while smiling at Johnny through the rear view mirror.
"wha- dude we're here already?!" Johnny asks, sitting up and rubbing his eyes.
"Yup" Matty answers with a dorky smile on his face.
Matty follows our GPS through the city, en route to our new house. We pass a cute looking bakery and a quaint little ice-cream shop along the way. As the GPS announces we are near our new house we pass a high school, the field was lively with a huge marching band and girls waving flags. I press my face to the window to get a closer look, trying to read the name of the school, and I pull back immediately, the window is HOT, like hot HOT. Summer in Portland is hot but Vegas? I am positive that there is no where in the world with a summer hotter than Vegas. Now here I am with my nose slightly stinging and I didn't even get the school's name.
"Turn right onto Valley Oaks drive, and your destination will be on the left" Came the GPS voice pulling me out of my thoughts.
Matty makes the turn and the moving truck and our parents standing on the side walk come into view, Matty parks and cuts the engine. I hurriedly get out, loving the feeling of no longer being cooped up in the car. My brothers follow suit. We walk up to our parent who were finishing up a conversation the the mover, who was handing over our new house keys to my dad, they had unloaded all of our furniture and boxes this morning while aunt Lisa oversaw. Dad thanked then, shaking their hand.
"Ya'll have a good one" the mover said tipping his cap at us, taking his leave.
As soon as we are alone in our drive way, we turn and fully admire our new home.
"Welcome home, family!" my mom gleefully exclaims, taking my father's hand and rushing up to unlock the front door.
Welcome home, indeed.
