In the rear palace, many things can happen. While everything looks beautiful, noble and almost like paradise, the events and political intrigues are more than scary. The higher concubines try and seduce the emperor to choose them as the empress concubine, their servants go out of their way to wage war among not only themselves, but might try and harm their or other concubines as well. Poisoning ministers, servants or just about anyone is a normal occurence. Is it a curse, is there a real scientific explanation for this? Who knows, really.
