Ike sat at the table, watching . . . . His eyes were focused on nothing in particular, but still, he stared. It was imperative that he sat down to think.

To breathe To breathe To breathe To breathe To breathe To breathe.

Assuring himself it would get better didn't make it better. It was childish. You're always so childish. Your first reaction is always so childish.

From the top of the scene, Ike. Where you left off.

He stirred his coffee absently.

Hanna was at the grocery store... she was supposed to see the stranger again. The shady figure with which I intended to pull the plot along.

Garbage.

Ike pushed his mug of coffee from his lips, onto the table. It sloshed out past the rim, streaking down. He watched it settle.

At least, no one knew about this one. Just him. As far as his editor knew, he was working on something. But never had he read it.

It'd be okay to put it to rest.

He sat there for a second, re-playing those words.

         put it to rest

             put it to rest

                  put it to rest.

            put it to rest

      put it to rest

No.

I'll sleep on it.

He glanced at his clock. 5:32. The day flew by, huh.

Tired limbs helped him out of his seat. He felt stiff. Like someone who had been sitting still all too long. Because he had. It was time for the write in. He turned to pay Amy for her hospitable service. She would amble over to re-fill his mug when he was running low. She knew that was as far as he would let her go. She knew he was thinking. He handed her the money, forgetting to say anything.

"Ike..." She didn't look up, she hardly spoke.

The shop was empty, they could be friendlier out of the company of customers.

"Yes, Amy."

... Why did you let her see you like that?

" Please. Don't do anything stupid." Amy-speak for I care.

He smiled a little.

And nodded. Good to see she still had faith in him.

" I mean it." she continued. Ike backed out towards the door, facing her. She smiled at his attempt to be as playful as he would have been, but even there, in the girls eyes there was concern. They shone with it. He saw it, but it was easier to pretend he hadn't.

" That's no fun. " Ike tried a smile.

The door jingled when he hit it. "Be careful okay?"

He nodded.

Even though he had left, in his mind, he found himself still sitting there.

He sat down for one second, and suddenly it was five pm. It must have been the thoughts.

The thoughts were taking him away.

Ike walked on, taking out his smart-phone and putting in the address where the write-in was to be held... droplets of water struck the little screen

It rained outside.

The writer took no notice.
