Birthday Cuddles

I'm almost positive that January 19th is a date you have school in the game, but for this oneshot, let's just pretend that they have a day off. The top picture has nothing to do with the story, it's just cute.

(Takes place in my Chase The Truth canon, post-epilogue)

~Normal POV

Kanji couldn't help waking up to the sound of his phone buzzing with text messages. He really should have turned it off before bed last night, but he forgot. He rubbed his eyes sleepily, and checked his phone. Just a few "happy birthday" messages from his friends, and a reminder that they were all going to get together later for his party. He smiled at the thought. Even Yu had sent a message saying he would be coming back to Inaba to visit for the day. But right now, Kanji just wanted to sleep in. His mom usually let him do that on this day. He put his phone down and looked to his side.

Sleeping peacefully beside him was his girlfriend Naoto. It took a little convincing to get his mom to let her stay over, but since today was his birthday, she was fine with it. Of course, they weren't alone in the house, so nothing would have happened anyway. She had borrowed one of his shirts to sleep in. Kanji settled back into the covers and wrapped his arm around her, before falling back asleep. And ignoring the next message he got on his phone.

After a while of sleeping in, Kanji woke again to find that over an hour had passed. Naoto was still asleep. He felt more awake now, so it was probably ok to wake her up too. She wasn't usually one to oversleep.

"Naoto? Time to get up..."

Naoto stirred slightly and looked up at him, smiling. "Good morning, Kanji-" She moved closer and gave him a soft kiss. "Happy birthday..."

"Thanks..."

Naoto sat up and stretched. Kanji smiled and stared at her. Her hair was messy, and he couldn't help thinking it looked really cute that way.

She noticed his staring. "What?"

"You look cute with your hair like that," He answered sheepishly. Naoto turned pink, and went to fix her hair, but Kanji gently pulled her in for a hug to stop her.

She didn't try to pull away and snuggled into him comfortably. They stayed like that for a while. Just holding each other and occasionally kissing. It was a perfect way to start the day, albeit rather unproductive. But could anyone blame them? It was cold outside the blankets. And it was Kanji's birthday, so if he wanted to lie in bed and cuddle his girlfriend a while longer then who was gonna stop him? Nobody, of course! His phone buzzed again, but he ignored it.

"Shouldn't you see what that's about," Naoto asked.

"Mm, I'm a little busy right now." Kanji answered before giving her another kiss.

One kiss turned into several more, and the two were quickly too distracted by their smooching to care about their friends trying to contact them.

~...

"Ok- let me just ask you this, Kanji: why the hell were you almost two hours late to your own birthday celebration?!" Yosuke asked, exasperatedly.

Kanji blushed and replied, "W- er, I overslept... And it made me late to pick up Naoto, too... S-Sorry."

Naoto's face reddened too, but she tried to remain casual and not give anything away. "Smooth, Kanji. Now they probably think we were doing... something else... This is why I didn't tell anyone I was spending the night at your house..."

"Uh huh... and Naoto, why didn't you answer your texts?" Rise asked.

"My phone was dead," Naoto lied.

The rest of the Investigation Team looked between the two suspiciously. They decided to move onto having their party and not bother asking again. But it was obvious to Kanji and Naoto that they weren't going to get their friends to believe them no matter what they said.

Well, at least the extra cuddles and kisses were worth it.
