October 28, 1995

I was sitting on the couch reading when my brother came in and plopped down. He reached forward to grab the remote off the coffee table and flicked the tv on. I tried to ignore him and whatever was going on MTV. After about ten minutes of reading the same line over and over, I closed my book. "I thought you were going to be with Sidney," I said, sighing. "Yeah, well, I thought so too," he said, not taking his eyes off the tv.

Sidney has been distant from everyone as of late, but mostly, she's been distant from Billy. She doesn't let him kiss her or even hold her hand. I don't blame her, though. Her mom died a few months ago. Maureen Prescott was found brutally murdered in her home. Sidney was the one to find her, which I can't even imagine what that does to someone. Later on, it was released that she wasn't just murdered, but she was raped as well. It didn't take long for the killer to be caught either.

Cotton Weary was a man that Maureen was having an affair with. It doesn't surprise me that she was having an affair. There were rumors around town that she's been seen with a few different men. Every time Sidney's dad went out, Maureen was always sneaking off. Sidney denied that her mother had an affair with Cotton. She insisted that he raped her because her mother would never do that.

Billy has been trying to be understanding and supportive. He's been there for her since the night it all happened. He's been there for her even though he's been struggling with our mom leaving a month before Maureen's murder. Billy was always closer to mom than he was with dad. He was pissed when she left. Now his girlfriend won't let him touch her.

"She just needs time, Billy. Her mother was murder literally a month ago. I would be the same way if that were our mom," I told him. Billy and I weren't close. We nitpicked at each other a lot and sometimes would scream and yell at each other. It was a typical sister brother relationship. We were a year apart and complete opposites. Billy was quiet, but he was kind of popular. He made friends easily, and all the girls in school had a crush on him.

Me, I'm quiet and avoid people most of the time. I'm awkward at times, hate being in large crowds, and would rather stay in, read, and enjoy having the house to myself. I have friends, but those friends are also Billy's friends. I have maybe two friends outside of that group that I'm pretty sure are only my friends because they have a crush on my brother. "Yeah, well, she's completely pushing me away," he said, got up, and went upstairs. I rolled my eyes and opened my book again.

He would be even more mad that she wasn't going to Stu's Hallowen party with him. The phone rang, making me groan. "Billy, get the phone!" I yelled. "You get it!" He yelled back. I slammed my book closed, got up, and walked into the kitchen. Picking the phone up off the hook, I pressed it to my ear. "Hello?" Silence. That's all there was; nothing but silence. "Okay, I'm hanging up now." I hung the phone up and went upstairs.

Billy popped his head out of his room as I reached my hand for my doorknob. "Who was it?" He asked. I shrugged, "I don't know. Nobody said anything," I told him. He hummed and went back into his room but then stopped. "Stu's coming over. He's bringing pizza." With that, he closed his door. An hour later, Stu's voice came from downstairs. I opened my bedroom door just as Billy was going down the stairs. "He knows how to knock, right?" I asked. Billy ignored me and continued down the stairs. I followed seconds later.

"You do know how to knock or even use a doorbell, correct?" I asked Stu. He smiled at me and pulled me into a hug. I kept my arms at my sides. "Get…off…of…me." I squeezed my hands between us and pushed him away. "You comin' to my Halloween Party?" He asked. I never went to his big parties; there were always too many people. "Probably not, Stu. You know that I hate large crowds." Billy scoffed and took a bite of his pizza. "Come on, everyone will be there. Randy and Tatum will be there. Aaaand…I might have told Park Miller you would be there."

Parker Miller, Woodsboro High's basketball captain. Mr. Know-It-All himself. He was one of those guys who hit it and then dipped. He hits on every girl he finds attractive and looks easy to him. He bullies the people who aren't popular, shoves them into lockers, and slaps their books out of their hands. He's a Grade A asshole. "Why the hell would you do that?!" I asked. Stu shrugged, "He likes you!" He tried to defend himself. I looked over at Billy, who just shrugged.

"Seriously?! Parker Miller is an asshole! All he wants to do is get into my pants!" They both just looked at me, only making me more frustrated. "Oh, so you're okay with some guy just wanting to use me for sex and then dump me like I never existed? Good to know my big brother fucking cares about me," I said. I shook my head and went to walk away but Billy stopped me. "Hey, wait. Of course I care. But does it really matter what I say or think? You'll get pissed off either way. Clam I'm being too overprotective."

"I'll go to the stupid party, but keep Parker away from me." I pointed at Stu, giving him a pointed look. He held his hands up in mock surrender and nodded his head. "Sure thing. Can you hook me up with Casey Becker?" He gave me those puppy eyes he's way too good at giving and I caved. "Fine, I'll try. But no promises!" I grabbed a slice of pizza and took a bite of it.

We ate, watched a couple movies, then Stu went home. I went upstairs, got a shower, and got ready for bed. Casey Becker was one of my best friends. One thing I didn't mention to Stu, only because it would blow up his ego, which he didn't need, was that Casey liked him too. She slams me with questions about him all the time. She would be happy to hear that Stu likes her back.
