CHAPTER 2 OF 6
SOME THINGS CAN'T BE FIXED
"He kissed me," Jacob says to his mother.
Madeline's eyes widened, "He... KISSED you. Actual kissing? Lips to lips?"
Jacob takes a deep breath and nods, "Yeah."
"Wait... How did this happen?" She asks.
Jacob shakes his head, "We were in the pool. I barely can swim, I just stayed at the edge of the pool and moved around a little. Caleb, he was moving around a LOT. He was great. Then, he emerged in front of me. I admit, I was... Looking at his chest... His wet chest. He saw me doing it, and pointed it out. At first, we both just laughed it off. Then, he said... That he was scared. He was scared that he has no idea what's gonna happen. He was thinking about the idea that we'd never find Sarah and Reggie. Then, he said... He needed to try something. He said that at least once, he needed to do something. Then, he grabbed my face, leaned forward, and... That's when it happened."
Jacob is clearly still processing the whole thing, and clearly Madeline has no idea what to say or think.
"What... Was it like?" Madeline asked.
Jacob smiles, "It was a LOT of things. To have his lips touch mine, we felt... connected. What's the saying... I am you, and you are me? It felt like that. It felt like Caleb and I were connected to each other. To feel his lips on mine and to put my hand on his chest as we did it... It's everything I've wanted since the second I laid eyes on him."
Jacob is still smiling... Then his smile fades.
"But then it stopped. I realized it was wrong. Caleb still has Sarah. She's out there somewhere, and Reginald is her son, and Caleb is his father. We... As much as I've wanted it, as amazing as it felt... It was wrong. So, I leaned out, and I told him that. I told him what we were doing was wrong. Then, he just left. He told me to forget it ever happened," Jacob sighs. He's starting to fight back tears.
Madeline nods, "When he came back into the suite, he was really quiet."
Caleb is now outside, 'getting some fresh air' on the balcony.
Jacob looks over at Caleb from the glass, seeing him look out at the skyline.
"I... I think I'm gonna lose him, mom. Like, REALLY, lose him. Listen... I never told you this, but... Caleb told me he knew. When he picked me up today, when he first came to the house... He said he knew."
"That you're in love with him?" Madeline asks.
Jacob nods, "Yeah. I was gonna tell you, but, well, we know how things went."
"Well, why did he want us to come to his home?" Madeline asked.
"He said... He wanted us to just spend some time just being friends," Jacob says, "Then, after a few days, we were gonna go in his room and have a chat. But mom, he said... He said that, he wasn't sure if we were gonna be friends anymore. Because of my feelings for him. I think..."
Emotions fully fill up Jacob, "I think, this whole trip... Is supposed to be goodbye. I think that's always been the plan. He was doing this to say goodbye to me. And now... now we kissed. If we couldn't be friends before, we sure can't now."
Madeline sighs, "Do you think, Jacob... He wants you now?"
Jacob is very clearly emotional, "That's the WORST part. Maybe he does. But even so... We both know it's wrong."
Madeline is looking very upset too, "Jacob, baby boy... I am so SO sorry about this. Love is.... Complicated. Trust me, I know. I think Caleb kissed you because he's scared. Confused. His wife and baby boy are missing. His mind is... Racing."
