It's a little heartbreaking when you finally did a good job and got somewhere in life, only to have someone point out all the wrongs you did. It feels like 'What was the point?' That was what was processing through my mind now as my captain yelled in my face. I wanted to complain and yell about how tired Grace and I were. But I couldn't. I was a grown man, not a child.
"Two days ago, you found out that your and Micah's lives were in danger. You and Detective Gracylnne made a plan to get Micah to safety with the kids. Yet, here we are, in a complete fucking mess!"
"Captain, we didn't know that Kenneth and Esme were going to act so quickly. But, we got Esme in custody! We can-"
"I don't care, Miller! Just because you got Esme here, your little story won't provide enough evidence in court! It's just a story. Now, Kenneth is a whole other situation. We don't even know where he disappeared to, and not to mention, he's armed and one of the best detectives around! He knows we are on to him!"
"Detectives are out trying to locate him right now. As for Esme, give me some time to talk to her. I'll get her to crack open."
"The woman is a literal psychopath. We can't trust what she says," Grace mumbled.
"Right now, her loyalties lie with Kenneth. We have evidence of their illegal relationship. I've been digging," I said and dug around my box that contained my evidence regarding this case. "Look at this."
It was disturbing, but it was inappropriate photos regarding both Esme and Kenneth. I could see both the captain and Grace cringe at the photos. I had an idea of how to turn this around and get Esme to turn against Kenneth, but I needed the captain to agree and let me see her. I was going to win this, I had to.
Ophelia released a heavy sigh and dropped herself on her desk chair before saying, "You have until the end of today to figure this shit out. I want updates regarding both Kenneth and Esme. Now, get out of my office."
Grace and I practically rushed out with the evidence and ran to our own office. We quickly cleared the floor and dumped all the evidence out onto the floor, both of us on the ground and searching through every little thing. We were desperate to find better evidence, and once we found that evidence, we wanted to find even better than that. I felt terrible, Grace was being looked down on by our captain because of me, and I could tell she was annoyed with me. But this was important for us.
"What angle are we even looking for?" Grace asked with a frustrated sigh. "I need to know everything to help you."
"Okay, look," I said and pointed at the photos. "This girl here is Esme. However, this girl is not."
Grace grabbed the photo, and her eyes widened upon realizing the girl looked like Esme, but it wasn't. I passed Grace three more photos, all with different girls. Esme made it clear that she and Kenneth had a whole Bonnie and Clyde story. However, Clyde was seeing other girls, and if there's one thing that can change Esme, it's the betrayal of her lover. Her own Clyde was not meant to be.
"So, if we expose Kenneth, do you think Esme would rat him out?"
"She doesn't understand emotions. She just knows how to copy it. However, something tells me she's about to learn the emotion of being pissed off."
"Henry, where did you get all this evidence? We didn't have this before."
"Jacob found it when he was working with Kenneth," I lied and bagged up the important evidence to take with me to go see Esme. "Listen, I know I dug us in some pretty bad shit, but I'll get us out. Okay? Don't worry. All I need you to do is patrol the area and wait for my call. We are going to find Kenneth and shut down this case. We will finally win."
