It's crazy how you may think you know someone, but when you really think about it, you may not know that person at all. Before this case was given to me and my life became a mess, Jacob and I were friendly. We weren't "best friends," but we knew a decent amount about each other to form an idea of what the other person is like. Jacob had a big ego and liked to take the lead on things. He was born and raised around the idea that men had to be dominant, provide for the family, and have kids to pass down their family name. If things didn't go his way, something was wrong. But if you were able to look past all his ideas and thoughts, he was a pretty decent guy. I didn't find it hard to communicate with him. Though that was probably because I liked to keep to myself, and I'd let him talk his nonsense and just listen to him. It was obvious he felt like he had the upper hand at all times when it came to us two.

Throughout all this time, I did have two takeaways. The first one was obvious. He needed to have control. The second one, he loved his job. There hasn't been a day he called out, and he rarely uses his sick days or vacation days. He's always on time, if not early. He always tried to be the last one to leave the scene to try and find any and all evidence. It was clear that he wanted to be the best detective ever. This is why I found it hard to believe that the Captain took it upon herself to add his name to our list.

"It just doesn't make sense. Why Jacob? He's off this case. He didn't want anything to do with it anymore because of all the dead ends."

"Maybe he doesn't want to be on the case because he was scared he would slip up?"

"I don't think so, Jacob is smart. If anything, he'd take this as an advantage to cover up Jackson Harris's tracks."

"Grace, what if he's not working for Jackson Harris? What if he's part of that new gang we think is forming?"

"I don't know. I've met his wife. She's pretty calm. I don't think she'd be married to a criminal."

"Okay then, let's think. We obviously can't ask the Captain, at least not in plain sight or near the building. So, let's try and figure out why she would write down his name."

"Do you think he said something to her when he was in the office with her?"

"It'll be difficult to find that out. We can't ask either of them. The best way of going at this is to not involve the Captain anymore to not raise suspicion."

Grace sighed and slouched in the car seat. She took out her laptop and connected to her phone's internet to be able to navigate around it. She was tapping away on her laptop while I tried to focus on the road and resist the urge to look over. Her tapping was quick, and for a second, I thought she was writing a whole story with how much she was typing away. I never understood how she was okay with spending so much time on computers. I get frustrated easily if I suddenly get an error notification.

"Alright, I wrote some important questions we'll want to ask when we arrive. His name is Detective Jared Sanchez. Not much is known about his life after he transferred. The only thing known is that the case was supposed to be his big break, but after he couldn't solve it, he became silent. He is known as a great detective, but his captain is pretty lenient and allows him to work easy cases as he requested. We mainly want to focus on why Detective Kenneth was involved but was not formally involved according to the paperwork regarding the case. If he seems to be catching on, we should show him his notes and make a random question as to why we are bringing him up."

"You seem really prepared for this," I commented, amazed at how ready she was.

"The Captain made me your partner, especially after she took Jacob off. For weeks, all I've done is read file after file, but I'm a field detective, too. I'm tired of reading all the shit this asshole has done, and I can't do anything because I'm stuck in the office. I want to take this guy down, too."
