Gentle Percussion

A few days after the piece was made, Kel, Hero and Basil would be meeting with Mari to practice their cues. Mari still hadn't figured out a name so the piece would just be referred to as 'the piece'. The four were sat in the piano room, Mari was still figuring out how the instruments they had could be fully incorporated.

She knew that the tambourine and rattle-snake maraca could be used to mimic the sound of an ocean that could build up during the emotional bit of the piece. Basil playing the triangle was a bit patronising but he would have another important role, page turning for Aubrey and Sunny. Mari discussed what she had planned and they began to practice their cues, she set up the metronome.

"Once this part begins I need Basil to play the triangle and Kel and Hero gently and I mean GENTLY play their instruments and slowly build up the strength in their movements as the flute and violin kick in and slowly drop the intensity after the peak. Basil will play the triangle at the start, at the peak and one more time during the descent of the intensity.

Kel shook his wrist gently and slowly built up the intensity for around 20 seconds, "Like this Mari?" Mari responded with a thumbs up, Hero followed Kel's example but he was a bit more shaky with the build up, it took a whole lot longer for him to build it up.

"Hero, that build up is too long, I like the gentleness but the build up is quicker than that." Mari was giving him some good constructive criticism.

"Sorry." He scratches the back of his head, "Basil, are you happy with playing the triangle."

Basil chuckled a little, "Well I get to help Sunny and Aubrey by turning the page so it works for me." Hero wasn't really surprised that Basil found himself content with the role he'd be playing, there wasn't much of a point in asking in the first place. The four practiced for the next while but every time that either Kel, Hero or Basil messed up even a tiny bit, Mari just looked a little hesitant.

After an hour Sunny walked in carefully with a plate with lemonades and a bottle of Orange Joe, the four stopped playing, Hero smiled, "Sunny! You shouldn't have."

Sunny set down the plate, Kel immediately sprang for the Orange Joe, "Thanks Sunny, I was feeling a little parched." He began guzzling it.

Sunny sighed, "Don't get it all over the floor please..." Sunny was a bit too late on that, there was some already spilt on the carpet, which Kel was already trying to clean the spill using his shirt.

Mari turned to Sunny, "Not practicing today?"

Sunny shook his head, "Aubrey is out shopping with her parents and I don't want to get ahead. We'll be practicing later though."

"Oh, that's alright." Mari was a bit annoyed but her voice didn't really let that on, "Thanks for the drinks though."

Sunny nodded his head as he walked out of the room. Basil took a sip of lemonade before speaking up, "Before we get back to it, Mari, I wanted to ask you something ."

"Hm?" Mari put her elbow on her leg and her hand on her chin as to look quizzical.

"Do you know that Sunny-"

Kel groaned and finished the sentence for him, "'likes Aubrey' Basil there's a time and a place." Kel wasn't too enthusiastic about practicing but it was better than this.

Basil laughed, "Come on, Sunny and Aubrey act like how Hero and Mari act around each other sometimes."

Hero sighed, "They're just close friends..."

Mari giggles at this, "I have to agree with Hero, the two are just close friends. If you've seen Sunny flustered then you already know it's just because he's shy."
