(Leilani's POV)

I walk home alone as I bump music in my ears. It's been one of my routines since I started high school. I'm always so talkative at school but as soon as I leave, that switch shuts off. It's not like I don't have friends, I do. I have made the bestest friends I could've asked for at that school, I just don't like talking to people. Everyone believes that I'm an introvert and, I actually used to be one.

But after a couple unfortunate heartbreaks, I have learned that if I just keep to myself, I could never be hurt. After being cheated on by exes 1, 2, and 3, then having an unforgettable experience with ex number 4 that I don't even like talking about, it's just been easier to stay to myself and only speak to people I actually know. But being so closed off has some consequences in life. I always find myself pushing someone away, one way or another. Luckily, the people I push away actually talk about it and we end up being fine but it's still a burden.

After a little bit of walking, I finally arrive home. The first thing I notice is a car i've never seen before in the driveway and a couple boxes near the door. "Hmm, dad must have his friends helping him with work." I mutter to myself as I walk past the boxes into the house. I look into the kitchen and see my mom taking ingredients out for dinner. "Hi mom" I say with a soft smile and hug her. "Hi my pumpkin" My mom replies with the same smile and hugs me back. My mom has always been my #1 best friend since I was a child. I have never felt like I couldn't come to my mom with anything and, I wouldn't be surprised if she knew me better than I know myself.

I soon let go and walk over to the fridge, grabbing a bottle of water. "Mom, is dad upstairs?" I ask before taking a small sip of my water. "No, your father won't be back till dinner time." My mom replies as she continues to take out ingredients for dinner. I'm a bit confused at first but soon realize that Jayden and his friend might be setting up something for his room. "I'm gonna go put my stuff down, I'll be right back." I say before heading for the stairs. I walk upstairs to my room when I see the door next to my bedroom was open.

It was originally the guest room so my first thought was mom and dad have our aunt Carol visiting us again. I walk into my room to take off my backpack and shoes before grabbing my phone charger and walking out. Before I could head for the stairs, I heard Jayden's voice in the guest room, he was probably helping aunt Carol unpack her stuff. I walk over to the guest room to greet myself but I was definitely caught off guard. I stand in the doorway and with a soft smile I say, "Hi aunt Carol" "Who?" An unfamiliar voice answers back.

I'm confused as I see a tall girl standing in the middle of the room with her back facing me originally, but now she is face to face with me. I can't lie, she was really pretty. She was obviously taller than me by at least a foot, which is saying a lot cause I'm only 5'4. She had brown skin, curly hair that was in a bun, some piercings and tattoos, and a pretty cool sense of style. I snap myself out of my thoughts and muster up the courage to speak. "Umm who are you?"

Before the girl could respond, Jayden steps out of the closet and looks between me and the random girl in our guest room. "Oh Lani, you're home." Jayden says as he looks at me. "Yeah, i'm home Jayden. Now does mom know that you have your girlfriend here?" I cross my arms and speak in a serious tone. Jayden chuckles a bit and looks back at me. "Lani, this isn't my girlfriend. Remember Kayla back when we were younger? The girl we always played with till she moved away when she was 13."

I look at her for a second, then the memories begin rolling in. When I first met her, when she taught me how to ride a bike, when she was my-. I'm snapped out of my thoughts at the sound of her voice, "Oh, so you're Leilani. You've really grown up shorty." She says with a smile as she leans back onto the dresser drawer. I run my hands through my hair and look up at her, "Yeah, you've grown up to Kayla." My voice is a little softer know as I remember how she always called me shorty when we were kids.
