POV AUTHOR

It had been a month since their friendship began, and in this short time, they had all become inseparable. Frequent friend dates, night-outs, and endless teasing had made their bond even stronger.

Tara and Tarun were slowly getting closer, though Tara was blissfully unaware of her own feelings. Meanwhile, Rohan had officially become Tara’s best buddy and partner-in-crime, much to the dismay of Tarun, who had to tolerate their never-ending antics.

The only thing running through Tara's mind was Tarun's statement from last night.

Flashback:

Tara and Tarun were texting, something that had become a routine. But out of curiosity, Tara asked him a question that had been bugging her.

Tara: "Tarun, why did it matter to you if I was ogling that boy?"

His reply came almost instantly.

Tarun: "Everything matters to me when it comes to you. And I can't stand you looking at some random guy who isn’t me."

Tara blinked. Wait… what?!

Tara: "Why so?"

Tarun: "Because I like you. I fell for you at first sight, and I don’t want to beat around the bush. I also don’t want to wait for some idiot to come and woo you while I sit back like a fool. I’ve spent the last month watching guys flirt with you, and I am NOT okay with it. I might not look like the possessive type, but baby, I’m so possessive about you that I can kill anyone for you."

Tara stared at her phone. Her heart was hammering in her chest, beating faster than a Mumbai local train.

She quickly switched off her phone, shoved it under her pillow, and pulled her blanket over her face. What. Just. Happened?

She didn’t reply to his message after that. Not because she didn’t want to. But because she had no idea what to say. Her brain was malfunctioning. Like, complete system failure.

Flashback ends

"Tara, beta, where are you lost?" her mother asked, pulling her out of her thoughts.

"Huh? Oh… nothing, Mumma. I’m full. Bhai, let's go, we're late," she said quickly, grabbing her bag and dashing off before her mother could ask any more questions.

*******

In classroom

Tara was completely zoned out, her mind still stuck on Tarun's words from last night.

"Shorty, where are you lost?" Rohan whispered from beside her.

"Nothing," she muttered, shaking her head.

Rohan narrowed his eyes. "Don’t lie to me. You know I can read you better than your own diary."

Tara sighed. There was no escape. "Tarun… proposed to me yesterday."

"WHAT?" Rohan shouted.

The entire class turned to look at him. Even the teacher raised an eyebrow.

"Mr. Rohan, do you have a problem?"

"Uh—no, miss. Sorry," he mumbled, sinking into his chair, his face red with embarrassment.

Once the teacher looked away, he leaned closer. "Tara, are you serious? Tarun finally grew a backbone?"

"You KNEW?!" Tara whisper-yelled.

"Uh… well, yeah?" Rohan scratched his neck with a sheepish smile. "Bro code, you know?"

"TRAITOR." She smacked his arm.

"Okay, okay, I deserved that. But tell me, what’s the issue? Don’t you like him?"

Tara sighed. "I… I don’t know. I mean, he’s sweet. He takes care of me just like Manav bhai does. But I don’t know if I like him like that."

Rohan’s expression softened. "Don’t overthink it. Your heart will figure it out. Now, let’s go. The auditorium announcement is about to start."

*******

As they reached the auditorium, Tara's eyes subconsciously started looking for Tarun. But he was nowhere to be seen.

Soon, the principal arrived.

"Good morning, students. I have both good news and bad news for you."

The entire hall groaned.

"The good news is that the day after tomorrow is your 11th standard freshers' party!"

The hall erupted into cheers.

"And the bad news is that your exams start next week."

The hall instantly fell into dead silence. Someone even muttered, "Sir, thodi daya karlo ("Sir, have some mercy)

Ignoring the chaos, the principal continued, "After your exams, the school has planned a tour to Chandigarh and Mussoorie!"

The hall erupted again.

Tara was still in her thoughts when she overheard a girl whispering to her friend.

"Yaar, Tarun is so handsome. I was thinking of proposing to him, but I heard he’s dating Samiksha."

Tara felt a sudden pang of jealousy.

Wait… what?!

Since when did Samiksha and Tarun become a thing?!

Her fingers clenched into fists. She hated how her heart reacted to this information. Stupid heart. Stupid Tarun. Stupid Samiksha. Stupid—wait, why was she even getting angry?!

Trying to ignore her emotions, she turned to her friends.

"Guys, I need to go to the washroom. You all go ahead."

And without waiting for a response, she rushed out.

******

So, what's next for Tara? Is she going to ignore Tarun or confront him? And what’s with this Samiksha rumor?
