17. REAL LIFE

ALYSSA stood there looking at her closet. a wardrobe full of clothes, yet nothing to wear. nothing to impress.
she was going for lunch with robert today, it was a friendly get together, and they had met up multiple times. this time just felt different. she wanted to look good to impress him.
nothing in her closet felt eye catching, so she did the only thing she could. she called her best friend, athena.

*facetime call between yeehaw and medusa, 9:17 AM*

"this better be good, griffin and i were just getting hot and heavy."

"i just want you to stop saying odd shit."

"girl, i'm kidding. what's up?

"i need help with an outfit, im going to lunch with robert, and i wanna look good."

"you wanna look bangable you mean."

"stop it, get griffin in here, i need an older males opinion."

"GRIFFIN!"
"i'm in the bathroom!"

"someone had to use the shitter."

"leave my dinosaur alone, alyssa mcgraw."

"your dinosaur is hot, athena herring."

"what did you need me for, darling?"
"we need to find alyssa a bangable outfit."
"what does that have to do with me?"

"because you're a man! duh!"

"and this is your one free pass to say if another woman is hot enough to sleep with!"
"but i'm happy with knowing you're the only one i'd sleep with."

"griffin, i swear to christ himself. HELP ME. i have lunch with robert."

"oh! then yeah, i really need to help."

*end of facetime call, 11:24 AM*

a couple hours later, and alyssa felt decent. she had a good laugh with athena and griffin like she always did. she loved them, couldn't wait for him to pop the question, he really needed to.

alyssa was fashionable 10 minutes late to meet robert at the little cafe. "was starting to think i wasn't worth your time, ms. mcgraw." robert chuckled, but immediately gave her the tight hug he typically did. "oh robert! you know you're not!" she shot back, laughing a little. she was grateful they had a friendship where they could be absolutely horrible to each other, and it be funny. "do you know what you want?" robert hummed, he obviously had time to look over the menu while waiting. "can i sit down and look? then answer that." alyssa blinked at him. "no, i need an answer now." his smile contagious, they both busted out laughing. that's how their lunches went. they were full of laughter, jokes, and romantic tension that neither wanted to express. everything was going great, until alyssa's phone started to ring. "sorry, my mom's facetiming me? very convenient time." alyssa tapped the accept button.

*facetime between mom🩷 and aly🩷*

"hola."

"hi honey! we've got some guests over."

"you called me."

"i know, the guest wanted to say hi."
"hey sweetheart, we miss you here in tennessee!"

"i miss you, dad! im actually with a guest too."
"hi!"
"okay, that's enough of robert."
"HEY!"

"are you on a date?!"

"with robert? absolutely not. i'd never stoop that low."
"excuse me, i'm quite the catch."
"well damn, i'm throwing you back."

"alyssa, enough about you and your boyfriend. guess who else is here?"

"i couldn't possibly guess, dad, you know, a million people."

"excuse me, i'm one in a million!"

"the gasp you just let out was crazy."
"MR. PAISLEY, HI!"

"i've know you forever and im still mr. paisley!"

"absolutely, my favorite adult."
"i thought i was your favorite."
"sometimes."

"well honey! i'm sorry to interrupt your date! your dad and i just wanted to say hi while brad was here. when are you coming to visit us?!"

"uhhh, soon. promise."

"okay! bring your boyfriend."

"he's not.."

*end of facetime call between mom🩷 and aly🩷*

"she hung up on me!" alyssa huffs. "HA! you deserved it." robert laughed while taking food off of his date-whos-not-his-date's plate. "i really need to go back to tennessee. i miss it there." she reminisced, tennessee always had a place in the young mcgraw's heart. it's where she grew up. it's cheesy, but the dirt roads and farm held a sense of comfort compared to hollywood. "never been." robert quipped. "WHAT?! you've never been to tennessee! well now we have to go!" the statement astonished robert and alyssa both, she didn't mean to just invite him to her hometown, and it certainly wasn't something he was expecting. the small silence between them settled before robert spoke. "i'll have to take you up on the opportunity." a small smile made its way across both their faces. if you were people watching, and knew nothing about them. you'd assume they were the couple from down the road just enjoying a bit of fresh air and each others company.

lunch went smoothly. robert took up the bill before alyssa could get her fingers on it. insisting because he felt it was right, even though he paid the last four times. he wouldn't even let her take the tip, he paid for it all. "let me walk you to your car." he put on his best gentleman smile. "who are you? and what have you done with robert!?" alyssa joked, knowing deep down robert was the biggest gentleman in the world to her. picking up tabs, opening doors, walking next to the road, leaving flowers just because. he truly was the gentleman she'd always dreamed of. yet, she was terrified he was the gentleman she'd never have.
the walk to the car was short. alyssa had put a mental note to park close, she hated walking far just to get in the car and turn around going the same way she walked from. robert, of course, walked her to the driver's side and opened it for her. "hey alyssa?" he pondered. "yeah?" she smiled at the man standing outside her car with the door still opened. "i really enjoy myself when we go to lunch together." robert's voice stayed strong when he admitted the confession. "me too." the girl smiled at him, she didn't even realize he was leaning in. robert got closer until his nose rubbed against the actress's. "robert." alyssa's voice was barely above a whisper. just as he started to pull back, he was pulled in.
their lips connected, and although they wouldn't admit it yet, there definitely was a feeling of fireworks. the kiss was perfect. it wasn't sloppy or wet, not dry either. it was perfect. their lips molded together. it felt like putting the last piece of a puzzle together. and after a few seconds, they both pulled away.
"wow." they both said in unison. a giggle came out of the girl's mouth. "that was worth the wait." downey smiled at her, she smiled back.
"i always enjoy myself with you, robert. i can't wait to see you again."
